Probably a 60 caliber which was pretty common in the Civil War. Later in the war they mostly used smaller calibers at higher speed and better accuracy. Monty

Re: Enormous Bullet. This is BIIG.

It appears from the pic to be a .69 caliber minie. It should mic out around 17.4 mm.

probably 69 cal. minie, there were no 60 cal. Mostly 58 and 69 with a few 54, 71, 72 some for foreign import muskets.

You .69 guys are correct. (That don't sound right somehow). I meant to hit the 9 and hit the zero by mistake. ::) Dang, almost did it again! Monty

Re: Enormous Bullet. This is BIIG.

It is 11/16th in. wide and 1 - 1/16th in. long. It weighs 8 washingtons and 1 lincoln. It is very heavy. It is not 50 caliber. I have fired a few before and this is not one. I have never even seen a .69, but, can not imagine that this was a shoulder fired weapon. Could have been. I would have been leary of holding anything in my shoulder like this, as, civil war muskets were not gas operated, which meant, that this would have most likely damaged anyone's sholder structure. Just my thoughts. Wish I had a caliper.....

New measurements as follows (according to my ruler) = 17mm wide 27 mm long. .69?
Laater...

Most definitely a shoulder fired weapon, probably a model 1842 musket that had been converted to a rifle musket by having rifling cut into the smoothbore barrel. Recoil is not that bad.
