Escape from New York

My leaving NY is not running either….it is a choice……..warm weather, lower cost of living, good food are among the reasons I left……
I am also not inclined to engage in exercises in futility……that is, there is no hope to change NY except how this country was founded………the elections are a sham, rigged and the judicial system is corrupt to the core………and how is it you hope to fix NY????
Many very good people stuck or who choose to live in upstate NY though. For me, I have had enough of winter…….was back for November and it was enough for a few years of cold weather…...

I live in Lancaster sc which now is basically a suburb of charlotte nc..I was raised in charlotte an work just outside of charlotte....We went to Lancaster because we were tired of city life. But what im getting at is.I rarely meet anyone from charlotte anymore, everyone here seems to b from somewhere else and most from the north east, especially NY.Probably half the the people I work with r from the NE.I like to talk to people about why they choose this area when they made there move. Most common answer is Jobs and weather. But most everyone I talk to love it in this area and have made it their home.Im not trying to sell u on the area, but I am giving u honest information barry

Thanks a lot Smittyman. SCDiggens also recommended Beaufort and I was in that area many years ago though I didn't really get to see much of it from Parris Island. They didn't let us out much, in fact not at all. But the weather was pretty nice there in February and March when I went through boot camp. As for the bugs , well, you can't have everything. Besides that's why they make mosquito nets! It's definitely on my route. Thanks again. Jim

Hello Nirros. Thanks for your service. Looks like somewhere between Fayettesville and Willmington. Willimgton looks to be a little expensive though. Hang in there and if your the last to leave NY, don't forget to turn out the lights !!

Hello Piegrande. Friendly people are probably more important than weather and taxes if you can afford the taxes. I thank you for the info. This is the kind of information you won't get from the chamber of Commerce or a travel agent. I thank you for the info. By the way, I'm really curious as to how much it costs a month to live in Mexico. The least.

Hello Follows Camp Craig. I am pretty much zeroed in on the N.C., S.C., Tennessee area. Thanks for the heads up on Cary. I don't want to be in ANY type of Containment Area. Sounds creepy. There's got to be an interesting story about Camp Craig.

Join the club Showtime 2385. I'm really relieved to know that it's not just me. Good Luck.

You know, if the folks who recognize there is a problem in Upstate NY keep taking the cowards' solution and running we'll never fix the problem. I'm entrenched and dug in for the duration. Have lived in this general spot all my life and won't be chased off without a good fight.

Moving "a little further West" didn't work for the Mohicans, the Susquenanok or the Delawares. Sometimes it's better to hold your ground.
Wow man.. The guy is retiring and wants better weather among other things. How is staying there going to give him the changes he is looking for ?

Hello Ray in NY. Another fellow sufferer. Thanks for the compliment on my thread. I never anticipated the response. I wish I had thought of it a year ago. Who else to ask but the Treasure Hunting fraternity ? Us treasure hunters while a bit secretive at times are a pretty tight nit group of people when necessary. Good luck in your search, I'm sure someone will fill us in on Georgia. Jim

Thanks a lot NHBandit, I appreciate the heads up. Like I just told Red James, to buy a place I would need a job and apparently there aren't any. It's about 5 degrees here right now in the lower Adirondacks . I'm really thinking SOUTH.
Going to be 55 here today. Not warm enough to take a dip in the pool but it dosn't get brutally hot here in the Summer either. As to the cost of heat I don't miss that either from living in NH. $700-$1000 to fill the heating oil tank and then it's gone in 5-6 weeks & time to fill it again.. Here we have a heat pump. Central heat & A/C. All electric. Electric bill runs about $125-$150 a month all year.

You know Goober, I have considered the RV lifestyle many times and I have allways wanted to see the Desert. The problem for me is that my finances are such that I'm down to a one shot deal. If I invest in an RV, I won't be able to buy a cheap piece of property. It's a little scary, I have to make the right move, it has to be my last. Thanks for the input and the best of luck to you , my friend.

Thanks for the back up doc-d. You hit it right on the head, an exercise in futility. It's all about quality of life. good to hear from you again ! Jim

Hi Barrywk. You don't have to sell me on Charlotte, I know it's a great place to be, that's why so many people are flocking there. And I certainly don't doubt your sincerity. The problem in my case is affordability. Jobs are tough enough and it's even tougher at 65. It also looks to be getting a little congested there with all the people relocating there. Property and rental prices seem to be pretty high. I'm looking for a small town, a little part time gig to supplement my social security and who knows , perhaps a little supplemental income from treasure hunting. I do sincerely appreciate the time you took for your input. Jim

Jim I'm only familiar with how it's done here in Tennessee but I'm in an unincorporated town. What that means is that there is no town government, no police department, no town hall, etc. Kids go to a county school, law is enforced by the County Sheriffs, and we have a volunteer fire dept. What that means is that we only pay county property taxes since there are no town expenses that need to be paid for. Anyone who lives in one of the larger towns or the city will have 2 tax bills to pay every year. I spoke with one of the county commissioners recently who happens to own property next door to me and we were talking about why taxes are so low. Being from the North you'll be able to relate to this. Up there they have huge road maintenance costs. Plowing in the Winter and then every Spring & Summer they are out fixing the roads due to frost heaves, pot holes, etc. Every 2-3 years they have to completely redo the entire road. Here the ground dosn't freeze & the snow is usually so minimal that the towns don't have plows. No frost heaves means they can pave a road and it's good for 25 years. I know that's just one reason but it's a big one if you think about it. The cost up North to maintain the roads is a huge expense. We are very rural and have cows & corn fields for neighbors but I can drive 15 minutes in any direction and be in a decent size city. The wife has 5 Walmarts to choose from less than a half hour away.. lol Here's what I see when I look out the kitchen window. And what it looks like across the street. I tell my friends back in NH I can sit on my front porch all day and watch absolutely nothing happen.. I mean to talk to the neighbor about detecting his fields in the Spring. He's got 200 acres.

Thanks Am......when i leave i will leave one small light on because lets face it....summer on lake ontario is really nice. i hope to have a family cottage set up by then just for my visits.

Other options include relocating out of the USSA……….while not perfect, life is pretty good here and the cost of living is about half or less than the USSA for most things………..problem in Ecuador is they severly restrict weapons………

amgrunt, i consider myself lucky im leaving with a good pention.already have a buyer for my house and 7 acres.going to turn most cash into gold&silver,as i dont trust the govt-banks.WHEN cash fails, you can always barter been doing it all my life anyway.i can fix almost anything, know how to grow a garden, fish, hunt, etc.what doesnt sell at yard sales, will have an auction to get rid of the rest.when you take time to think it out ANY problem CAN be solved! again i feel blessed to have some skills.if im very lucky mabey find gold, silver, artifacts,or whatever to supplement my lifestyle! like i said you dont need much when you get older.plus my wife agrees!! im not anti social,or paranoid, just very stubborn and self reliant.granted this kind of life isnt for everyone, but if the founders of this country could do it, with GODS help,so can we!! VERY BEST OF LUCK with YOUR quest. dennis.

Hi guys from the UK, how's digging in America?

Goober you have a huge plus.....your wife agrees.

How bout Gulf Shores Ala. Orange Beach is great. I'm 64 also and I think that would look at that area also. I don't think I could live on the beach but there are lots of places to look at. I even thought about working at a golf course 3 or 4 days a week then detecting the rest of the time. Anyway good luck to ya. Rook.
