Excalibur II - Frayed Cable Insulation

Hi. Going through all my equipment after several years. My Excalibur II has x3 trouble spots, 1) where the cable meets the coil, 2) where the headphones meet the control box and 3) where the cable meets the headphones. Depressing. I've always taken excellent care of my machines, although it's a bit dirty from hanging on the wall for quite a while (in my room). I've ordered a replacement battery, but now thinking I should maybe cancel the order. Is it worth sending in, or should I attempt cable replacement on my own, or at least patch the breaks? I don't want to write it off, but I'd need the battery to see if it still works, then make a decision from there. The actual wires seem to be Ok, but testing would be the only way to be certain. Any advice?

As you can see I've got the straight shaft and have replaced the knobs that broke early on.

You would need to have the coil and headphones replaced if you are going to put it underwater.

It helps to wipe the cables with vegetable based spray silicone to condition the cables to protect them.

Thank you ... kind of what I was thinking for the coil/headphones. The conditioning is a great idea, also thought about strengthening the weak points somehow as well.

A common problem with ExCals. Substandard insulation IMO. You might want to check with Tony Eisenhower for repairs. He's fixed a few cable problems for me in the past.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I've used some rubber tool handle dip for minor repairs and shallow water use. Kinda messy, but, works pretty good.

Thank you for the tip. I've been talking to Nolan at Minelab Americas and he suggested detectorrepair.com for the Excal , but they can do the CTX - price was less than expected. The cables on the Excal are literally crumbling in my hands, so need to do the full boat. I'm about to email them. They were a Warranty and Non-warranty repair facility prior to Minelab taking most functions back in house.
