Have my SE Pro coil on the way with both upper & lower shafts and will be taking it along with my regular Explorer stock coil to my favorite old area to do some tests. Going to compare Depth, masking, ability on small targets, and a combination of all three. Basically I'm going to find a target with my explorer (which works very welll) with stock coil as I've always done, then mark the spot and switch to the SE pro coil to compare.

So do you think....

1) The old stock EX II 10.5" coil will do better?

2) The new SE 11" Pro Coil?

3) Both will be too close to tell?

My 1050 works so well that I'm going to have to guess #1, but do hope it ends up being #2 or #3 so I can drop some weight off the detector. Should I be right and I do still prefer #1 I can guarantee there will be an SE Pro coil for sale that night with very little use. (like 20 targets)

I think if you find a target with your stock coil, then switch to the Pro coil you are not going to see much difference at all. Make sure you repeat the testing in opposite order... search with the Pro coil first, then switch to the stock coil to compare. This way you will find those potentially deeper and harder to find targets, and compare to your favorite coil to see if IT could have found those targets. Depending on your location, you may not be able to conclude much in 20 targets, especially if all of the targets are pretty easy to find. Why not give it some more time?

If the SE is easily staying with the stock I will change and scan with it. Targets will vary but there will always be difficult ones at these fields.

I didn't use the number 20 targets other than just to throw out a number, but I suspect it's all I'll need to know. Used an Explorer since about 2000 and haven't changed settings in about 5 years, and generally hunt the same type of sites. I'll easily know if one coil does better after a hunt comparing the two. As I said I'm pulling for the SE Pro but it will be for sale that night if I don't think it stacks up.

Good luck! I hope it helps you pull more treasure from your sites.

Being the fields get turned every now and again the plough does more than a change in coils can. But I still want to use the best coil available. Looking forward to playing aroud and will be able to do so as soon as my package arrives. (Finally the snow and frost is leaving)

I'll pretty much bet the pro coil will outpreform the stock coil by leaps and bounds ;D

I really hope you're right!!!!!!!!!

I think the pro coil will win you over especially in separation. Tom

In my opinion new coils is better because :
- detector is better balanced
- more stable
- separates better

Personally, I do not like the pinpointing of the Pro coil, so, I have switched back to the 1050 as I feel it does a better job in pinpointing. At least for my liking. I have ordered the 6" Excelerator and the 12x15 SEF coils to add to my arsenal, but, still have yet to receive them as the are on back-order. :angry4: :angry4:

I like my new Pro coil better than the 1050 stock . The tones are much crisper and cleaner as is the separation and it is a bit lighter . It does have a tendency to get hung up on twigs and some weeds though whereas the stock 1050 slides much easier over things . Give it a few days and a few different hunting situations to test it out ( getting rid of it that very day seems a bit rash ). I think you will be really happy with it . I would still keep a hockey puck sized coil for the real trashy sites though ( although some folks I know say the new Pro coil eliminates the need for one ). The Pro coil to me is a winner, I think you will end up keeping it .

I see you use the Explorer SE. When you say Explorer stock are you referring to the old 10.5" or the slimline that first came with the SE? There is a big difference and everyone should make it very clear when they are comparing the SE pro. I would expect every slimline user to be happy with the pro coil, that's just a given.

So far I have not been out to test the old 10.5" (xs & EX II coil) against the pro, but have used the pro several times and so far I still think the old coil is better. I hope test get some head to head tests done in the next week so I'll know which coil has to go.

Sorry Patch ,

I should have specified that I had been using the stock Explorer 2 coil on the SE . I have a Slimline coil I have tried on several occassions but I don't care for it . I have tried to sell it a few times with no success .

Had a chance to try it out yet ? Kind of curious to see what you think .

I got to try it a few times but didn't get to compare. Gut says I'm probably going to stick with the old one but at this point i can't say exactly why. It's hard to get out and test when you want to spend the time digging as much as you can. I will do the head to head at some point though, have to decide which way I will go for good.

I can relate to what you're saying about wanting to spend as much time digging as you can . I've been wanting to test my SE against my Explorer 2 for some time now under identical conditions but I don't seem to get enough time . Heck , I've got duties right now and can't even write all I wanted to in this post . Gotta go right this minute !!
