F-Ball field again - 2 sweet Keeper rings & Celtic Cross

(update on cross below)

Hey to y'all, hope life is good for you!

I hit the football stadium again, that is going through a major reconstruction of the field, for two short 2 hour evening hunts the past couple days. They are putting in a new small building by the concession stand. They dug the foundation today for that and back-filled and leveled the field getting ready to topsoil and sod it. They are moving fast!

Yesterday, I checked out the big mountain of dirt that they removed from the field and trucked out back of the stadium. I didn't find much. I guess they put the deeper soil over the top of the grass and top soil that they removed first...makes sense. That was 45 minutes wasted but oh well, it was worth a try.

Luckily, I also covered the area yesterday that they dug out today for the building foundation. Besides a lot of clad, including 30 quarters, I managed one sweet 925 ring yesterday. It was a heartstopper! Laying right on top, just down from the foundation area, hidden in the grassy area near the pole vault landing mat. It must have been lost in the past few weeks during a track meet there. It has a huge pink princess cut stone in it, got to be 5 carats at least and it is like new, shining big time. My daughter will be stealing this from me ;D. I also found a nice religious pendant, an angel blowing a trumpet. It's trinket but really pretty and has a couple purple stones in it too.

Today, I covered more of the grassy area, finding a lot more clad and quarters. After the good luck I had Sunday in the little 3 foot strip between the outside of the running track and the fence that goes all the way around the track, I thought it might be worth trying to cover more of that area. I covered only the areas right in front of the stands on both sides on Sunday. Great decision!! On my first ten feet of ground near the main end of the stadium, I hit a sweet large men's ring, just under the surface in the hard packed dirt. At first I thought it was gold, there are a bunch of hallmarks inside, but when I got home and looped it, it says SS 925 and the 5 is barely readable. It also says "Copyright symbol WMJ 97" It is really pretty and has little dancing native looking dudes carved into the ring all the way around. I was finding a lotof coins in the strip and a few junk jewelry pieces including a pretty GP gold bracelet laying on top. I worked my way 1/4 of the way around and was back on the home side near the same area I covered Sunday. There are two wooden benches there tipped on their sides against the fence. I decided to move them, pull them down a bit as there could be some more goodies in that hot spot area. Another good decision. My favorite find from there so far. A celtic cross. It is super heavy and very nice looking. On one side it is hallmarked "Scotland" and on the opposite side " C.A.I " in a rectangle then either "IONA" or "10 NA" It is most likely bronze material, not gold or silver, but it is well made, very dense and heavy, and makes a nice metal sound if a drop it on the table from a short height. I really like this piece!

Next trip back, I am going to go all the way around the outside of the track and cover this three foot strip area. I suppose, the track runners put their gear there during the meets and the football fans lean over the fence and dangle their hands during the football games. It's all dirt and definitely a hot spot.

Here's my two day totals. 4 hours hunt time, $17.63 in clad with 141 coins, (55 quarters) the two sterling 925 rings (ring # 53 & 54 for the year 11 gold/ 10 silver/ 33 trinket), the sweet Celtic Cross, and a few trinket jewelry pieces, athletic pins, etc. Here a few photos. Thanks for stopping in. HH to you all, good luck!

Smiles!

UPDATE 6/14/07 -
I did some research on the web and the cross appears to be an item from the Iona site in Scotland where one of the only remaining Celtic crosses/monuments remains to this day. It's called the St. Martin's cross, so this piece seems to be a soveneir possibly from the St. Martin's Cross in Iona Scotland. I could not find any examples on eBay or anywhere that were like the one I found so I am still not sure of the material or the age. I think it is bronze though. :)

Man, 4 hours... those coins and rings must leap out of the ground and wood chips!! Do you have to wear eye protection?

congrats.

huh... no woodchips ??? ...
no eye protection either but there's always the Ignore User button.

There were a lot of signals for sure and I work it hard out there. I know my machine and know how to retrieve a target quickly. 30 years metal detecting experience does that for you. Hard work is how anyone gets a lot of finds, isn't it?

Your comment is a bit cynical sounding Contractor but oh well, if that's how your want to be :-X

Great job! I too hunted the high school football field at my town with similar results. No rings but did find a watch and tons of quarters not very deep. Gotta love those places! I need to go back...I bet it has reseeded itself. Congrats.

Thanks BB! I just feel fortunate to get in there because it's usually off limits, behind lock and key. There are however, a few nice other areas at this school to look forward to. I noticed the parents all park up on the grass pretty close to the ball feilds for their kids baseball games instead of the parking lot that is quite far away. This school is the closest one to my house here also which will make a quick evening hunt , when I need a 'fix" easy. Good luck to you, thanks for the read!

HOLY SMOKES, YOU GOT ALOT FOR THAT DAY :o

Thanks Hardy!! The place being behind lock and key all the time (except this week) helps I suppose. I only wish I could have gotten to the field before they plowed it up, oh well, it's gone!

Incredible finds as usual Bdoo! love the rings! Don't let your daughter have the kokopele (sp?) ring though...that one is associated with fertility! :o lol Thanks so much for sharing your finds with us!

I knew there was a name for it, thanks! It's a men's ring... she wants the pink stone ring. The photos don't doo it justice. Now that you mention it, when I found the kokopele ring, I did feel a certain "rise" ... ::), I guess I was just excited to find the nice ring...lol.

Thanks for the great comment and info Cyn!

Hello BoobyDOO!
Great story, fabulous finds! I like hunting football-soccer fields; a lot of stuff can be found for sure!

GRB

There are a lot around, I should hit them more often but I get spoiled by the easy pickins in the woodchips...lazy...lol.
Thanks for the read and cool comment!

I went and hit what was a scraped football field two days ago...By the time I got there yesterday it had been seeded for new grass.
Damn the luck!
