Use a strong magnet to see if they are magnetic, if they are pass.. Using a accurate scale, weight would be 12.5 grams

Thanks so much..

Measure them with accurate calipers and measure them with a quality scale. Fakes can be the right weight, or the right size but only the exact coin-silver content can be both.

I'm also about to buy a roll of Walking Liberty halves. I hadn't thought about the potential for fakes. I guess I'll have to check each one with my caliper and magnet.

Only the cheapest fakes would use steel, and would probably have very obvious fake look to them. It's the Chinese fakes you have to be careful of.

Obvious but cannot be stated enough; I've seen fakes stamped with MIC really small (made in china), ones that said china, and latest CC, look for small markings you never know if you'll see something like a chinese province stamped. Anything that's on the coin (letter wise) and otherwise should not be there, should be rolled out as a fake.

and they can't be too "nice"...no mint luster....
