Was planning on heading to a small town branch where they will sell bags of the coin machine, but when I called to verify that the valut teller was in this morning I heard she wasn't so it wasn't worth the trip.

Instead I ended up bouncing around a few local banks in the other direction most of which my daily route does not take me near them.

Bank #1 (normal weekly stop for me)
1 - $50 bag of pennies (was hoping for nickels or dimes, but none yet)

Bank #2
Asked for halves whenthey said they had none I started asking about buying full bags of coins off the coin machine. I would have to call the person in charge of it a different day... But during the discussion (this bank is dead quiet other than me) I asked if it was possible to take a quick look in the half dollar bag and exchange some halves that I had in my pocket for any that I am looking for. She thought about it for a second and then said sure why not. She proceeded to pull the bag of and dump it out on the counter in front of me (probably around $100 worth of halves). I started picking out the silver ones and setting them aside. Ended up picking out 7 silver coins (I ignored the foreign coins as I didn't want to pay 50 cents for those). In the 7 were 2 1964's and 5 - 40% coins (including a 1970-D!).

Now the dilemma, I only had 2 half dollars in my pocket which should I take first. One was easy as I took 1 of the 1964's. The other I had to choose between the other 1964 and the 1970-D. I took the 1970-D and said I asked her to keep the other 5 separated as I would try a few other local banks and try to come up with 5 more half dollars to exchange.

Bank #3 (normal weekly stop for me)
They only had 1 clad half dollar (still 4 short), but since I was there anyway picked up the two bags they had full
1 - $1000 bag of quarters
1 - $50 bag of pennies

Bank #4
Had 9 clad half dollars so I ran back and exchanged 5 of those for the ones I had picked out. ;D Always nice to find a helpful teller on a slow day.

Bank #5 (Main planned stop on the whole trip)
Picked up
1 - $200 bag of nickels
1 - $50 bag of pennies
I could have also gotten a bag of quarters, but decided to bounce to a few more banks and try my luck at halves and pick up boxes.

Bank #6
They had halves but since I had no account they would have to charge me a "per roll" fee. I said skip it.

Bank #7 (drive thru only)
No halves and not much possibility of anything else so I didn't ask.

Bank #8
1 clad half dollar.

Bank #9
Cashed in some pennies I went through last night
Got a box of nickels

Bank #10
Box of quarters
30 rolls of nickels (they were short so they couldn't sell me the whole box)
Also picked up 2 older style $10 Federal Reserve Notes (1950C-G, 1981-C)
And a $2 Federal Reserve Star Note (1976-I) <-- I think this was the one that was valuable if in great shape, but I don't have a paper money price guide to verify. this one had a very slight rip so it's probably not worth much.

Bank #11
$3 in loose half dollars (skunk)
1 box of nickels
and 2 - $2 United States Notes (Red Seals) Both were 1928 Series G.
and last but not least I picked up $200 in $1 bills and ended up picking up 2 Federal Reserve Star Notes (1985-L, 2003-G)
Oh and grabbed a 1981 Canadian quarter out of the reject slot of the coin machine on the way out.

Was a fun little trip. Eventhough I had originally planned on 2 or 3 banks only.... ;D

And I am left with plenty of coins to search through on this balmy Minnesota winter day...

1970D Nice Find and I really need to communicate better

Gman,

Nice find on the 1970D. Hey, what is that $2.oo red seal and the blue seal bills worth each?

Reason I ask is that I need to communicate better with my tellers.

Went to a bank today to cash my check and got to speaking to the head teller who knows I collect coins and helps me out.

One of her tellers had saved me a $50 1974 note thinking since it was old I would like to have it. I bought it from her, thanked her and advised her I did not think it was collectable but if she got any with the blue or red seals to let me know.

At this time the Head teller says, I got in $700 worth of $2.oo bills like those just recently. I asked if she still had them and she advised me a man had come in recently and wanted some $2 bills for his grand children, when he saw what she had he quickly bought them all.

I advised her I would take any old bill they got with red and blue seals, any silver certificates, $500 and $1000 dollar bills that came in, etc., etc..

She said she would watch for them and let me know.

It was my loss I did not communicate better with them, but I have no complaints since they treat me great and actually appreciate my business.

A day late and $2.00 short.

Although this question probably belongs in the paper currency section. I think each red seal $2 bill in circulated but decent condition is probably around $5, but I am not a currency expert so don't quote me on that.

Re: Finally a 1970-D (and some other stuff)

Did a quick edge search of the quarters.

The $1000 bag was a complete skunk. The only non clad item in the bag was an Omega token. Not sure what its for.

The $500 box of quarters was a bit better. When the 6th roll produced a silver quarter, I was happy with the box. But when the 7th roll produced another one, I started hoping this would be a really good box. But alas it was not to be. Still happy with my first silver quarters of the year though. ;D

Thanks for the response!

Gman,

The only the reason I asked you the question here was because you made it a point in your post to tell us about your "Bill" finds during your quest.

If Jeff does not want it here he can move it or better yet, since I directed my question to you then he can just delete it instead of moving it.

Thanks for your response,

CLZinTX

I am sure it won't be moved as the main point of the overall post was bank hunting for coins. My only reason for saying this may be the wrong forum was that I am not terribly knowledgable about bill values and I would assume you would get a better answer in the other forum. I was not intending to imply that it was incorrect to ask the question here.

Sorry for the confusion. :)

Re: Finally a 1970-D (and some other stuff)

Well over the course of last night / today I managed to get through the $460 in nickels.

The $200 bag had
45 pre-1960 Jefferson (1939, 1940-X, 1940-D, 1941(2), 1941-S Small S, 1946(4), 1946-D, 1947-D, 1947-S, 1948-D, 1949(2), 1949-D, 1951, 1952(2), 1952-D, 1953, 1953-S, 1954(2), 1954-D(5), 1956-D(2), 1957-D(5), 1958-D(3), 1959-D(5))

15 Canadian (1968, 1973(2), 1975, 1981, 1982(2), 1987, 1993, 1994, 1995(2), 1997, 1998, 1999)

Box #1:
20 pre-1960 Jefferson (1940, 1941, 1946, 1948, 1949, 1952(2), 1953-D, 1954, 1956-D(2),1957-D, 1958-D(3), 1959, 1959-D(4))

5 Canadian (1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1998)

Box #2:
25 pre-1960 Jefferson (1938, 1940-S(2), 1941, 1941-D, 1942(3), 1946(3), 1947-D, 1948-D(2), 1949, 1952, 1952-D(2), 1956-D(2), 1957-D, 1958-D(2), 1959-D(2))

2 Canadian (1987, 1992)

and finally the $60 in rolls:
1 - 1937 Buffalo
1 - 1945-P War Nickel
40 other pre-1960 Jefferson (1939(3), 1940(2), 1940-D(3), 1941(5), 1941-D(2), 1942, 1946, 1946-D, 1947-D, 1952, 1952-S, 1954-D(2), 1955-D, 1957, 1957-D(4), 1958-D(7), 1959-D(4))

2 Canadian (1989, 1995)

Interestingly up until the last 5 rolls in the $60 batch, I had not found a single US Nickel which I didn't already have a roll of that date/mintmark and zero war nickels. I was starting to wonder what was going on this year as I have overall had very poor results except for in dimes and quarters. Then in back to back rolls the buffalo and the war nickel popped out. I might have to go back and try to get the rest of that box as I suspect there may be more goodies in the last $40 worth as it had a high pre-1960 ratio including 8 nickels from 1939, 1940, and 1941 in one roll.
