IH and I being fed up at looking at the same fields we've done and driven by again and again decided to keep driving until we got into the land of the unfamiliar.... and it worked! IH dug the best find in the first 5 minutes which left me scrambling the rest of the day to try and catch up, or at least dig something interesting. At the new site I could just not get over many coin signals and it was starting to tick me off because IH wasn't having any problem at all, but as how detecting can go we stop at a site we did a few years ago and my coil decided to wake up and I dug 4 coppers. (6 total for the day)

My find of the day was this 1700s Navy button.

I didn't but....

(nice one too)

You certainly did drive to the "Land of Unfamiliar"..............as I spot a U.S. Large Cent! ::)

Looks like the ground was kind to pewter, as those early decorative civilian buttons are in fairly good shape. Nice British Navy! :icon_thumleft:

You're lucky that we are digging tomorrow or it could have been more of an "owning." :laughing7:

Well we didn't go quite that far! :laughing7: The large cent was my last find of the day and I couldn't see the obverse enough to ID it, so thought I had a shot to steal the day. (would have needed to be 1700s)

Indeed, the ground at this field is better than we're used too, but unfortunately there wasn't a strong early military presence in this area. Obviously still some, and hope it gets better in future hunt.

OK Patch, time for you to give me a history lesson :laughing7:. On the Navy buttons, most are "fouled anchor" but yours isn't. I have found an "old" navy button where the rope goes the opposite way round the anchor to others that I have researched, please explain, cos I haven't found an answer yet :icon_scratch:

next you'll find some large cents!

Looks like you had a nice hunt for yourself this time IP  It could easily take me the rest of this year to find that much. And that ain't no bull.Tide still very high here every since the storm, skeeters will drain the blood from you in seconds,& to top it off rifle season came in today. ;D But will see what happens theres plenty of time.Couple of those pewter buttons look like or simular to some I've found with the spoke or wheel look to them.I really like the anchor button came up & out nice.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

As common as those little buttons are there seems to be very little written about them. One of the American Rev War button gurus called them 1700s Navy in a conversation I had with him years ago, and since then that's what I've called them too. On one occasional I did see someone call them Provincial Marine, but have never seen anything to back that up either.

Looks like you guys found a great site!! That's a damn good haul right there :headbang:

All I've found on them.........

Britain - Canada
Merchant Navy
Private Purchase - 1774-1812
