IH and I being fed up at looking at the same fields we've done and driven by again and again decided to keep driving until we got into the land of the unfamiliar.... and it worked! IH dug the best find in the first 5 minutes which left me scrambling the rest of the day to try and catch up, or at least dig something interesting. At the new site I could just not get over many coin signals and it was starting to tick me off because IH wasn't having any problem at all, but as how detecting can go we stop at a site we did a few years ago and my coil decided to wake up and I dug 4 coppers. (6 total for the day)

My find of the day was this 1700s Navy button.

All I've found on them.........

Britain - Canada
Merchant Navy
Private Purchase - 1774-1812

I was going to guess that or Spanish, because I'm pretty sure its not Royal Navy :icon_thumright:

Anyway, great bunch of finds for a change :D :headbang:

Any older nautical button is always collectable . I would be happy with just a plain flat button right now.. :coffee2:

And it begins...the finds should start coming now! I haven't been out on a serious hunt in weeks due to my workload but I hope to change that next week.

That seems to be a common button (and I hate to use that term for a 1700s button) in your area...I've dug two over there and I'm that this isn't your first...

It does make sense and explains why it's not with any Royal Navy references, and I totally agree with the time frame, but I would never base an ID entirely on that site. Definitely took it to the next step of ID'ing though.

It's definitely British. Common there and common here. If you've never found one I find that almost shocking.

I still wouldn't go quite that far because with finding a site so soon we never really got to do much driving to see how many good looking fields there is. I assume many, but an hour and a half away is quite a long trip. Research is important and we've always used it in combination with our usual scouting (and hope to be digging) missions, but now so many years in it's gone from important to vital. I can't see myself hitting the books hard this Winter because I have other things planned, but should put some time in before next Fall because what we're doing now really isn't working, or at least efficiently working with a high degree of success. I still see more bad days ahead than good but hopefully the willingness to travel will reward us with several more old sites like yesterday.

Yep, that button is very common. Not sure how many I've dug but would think at least a dozen.

Famous last words. :laughing7:

If you beat 6 coppers and 50 buttons I'll say you won. ;D

Did someone say buttons.....just love watching you guys get at it with the Colonial competition......to beat (50) buttons would be a challange in it self....but to find (52) War of 1812 buttons on one given day. Is very hard to beat......Remember it well!!! That is still a great day Ironpatch........WTG

good for him/her, I don't get out much & hardly find any buttons compared to the pro's

Nice finds Patch, you got some nice buttons with designs as opposed to the usual flat buttons.
I am amazed that Kirk was finally able to back up his smack talk with some nice finds :laughing7:
