Finally break into the 1800's!!!!!

When to the city court house park early this morning. I guess back in the day they used to hang people on top of the hill?? Kids also liked to sleighride down the same hill in the early 1900. I hoping somebody had dropped some change....

It's a tough spot to detect, with lots of "random, non repeatable" high hits. I think that they may have filled the park as some point, because it is acting like iron, but I think it's almost like tiny pieces of asphalt? Has anyone else seen this before? I'd like to run my WOT coil there, but I think that would just amplify it.

Anyway, I discriminated the crap out and went swinging. Some modern clad at first, and then I got a hit that was "coinish" sounding, but I was a little confused since it read out shallow. When I dug out popped a 1893 Indian head penny. YEAH ;D, finally broke the century mark!!! It was only 3 inches down? Indian heads clearly sound different than say wheats on the explorer.

So now I'm not sure if they filled in or not. Too many people around so I went off to my "silver spot", no silver today, but several old wheats. I can't make dates on them as of yet. A guy, non-MD'er, told me I was looking in the wrong spot, I was like "Thanks!" (inside I was going.......HEE HEE HEE!!!)

All in all, another lucky day for me!!!!

It's a great feeling when you finally accomplish that goal , and find that coin that has been hard to find! WTG 8) 8) 8)

congrats dreamweaver...I have yet to pull an IH out of the ground or get a coin from the 1800's but I know there must be some by me since I got a merc dime and a button from the late 1800's. Also have a buffalo nickel but that was dug up in another area...still found one though!

congrats again.

Congrats on the Indian! It's a very nice one with a full Liberty.

I've forgotten how many of these I've dug over the years but they still give me a nice little thrill even today.

Don't worry about the 3 inches...most I dig are that or less. This just shows you've learned how to pinpoint.

Best,

Badger

Congrats into the 1800's. I assume you are digging in Wisconsin? I am from Illinois and its tough in the midwest to find old coins, but they are out there

Congrats

Woah... You just have to know where to look! There are LOTS of old coins in Illinois! My buddy has found some of his best old coins over in Illinois parks and house sites! They are certainly out there! I am in Indiana and find quite a few coins dating back to the 1800s. I don't find them by the barrel full, haha, but there are plenty out there to be found, that's for sure!

Congrats on that beautiful old Indian Head!

Sled hills are misleading, so dig everything! My first IH penny also came on a sled hill... I got two of them and a wheatie in the same hole. I also dug a silver rosie at an inch deep, an 1890 IH at an inch deep, a 1919 wheat at about 10" with the WOT on, and a host of other goodies. The coins are all over the place on the depth charge. And yes, those Indian Head hit a little lower than wheats. 26-27 for zincs, 25 for pennies from 1944-1982, 23-24 for Indian heads on the digital.... I only use the smart screen though and listen to the sound of the signal...

If you are getting false signals then just keep lowering the sensitivity until you get a stable signal when sweeping your coil.
