Finally broke into the 1800's!

Until today, my oldest coin to date was a 1919 wheat penny(which IVe found several of including another today, lol)

Went out today and hit a new area of the old church/schoolhouse site Ive searched several times before. Had an older gentleman stop by while I was hunting and he told me he's 72 and went to school in the long gone scool house when he was in the 1st and 2nd grade. He pointed me to the CORRECT spot the schoolhouse was. Its several hundered yards from where I thought it was. So, I headed over to that area.

Hunted for three hours.

Found

1940 wheat penny (in the spot I was hunting at first)
1929 wheat penny
1919 wheat penny
AND
1892-o Barber dime! My first 18xx coin! Beat my oldest by 27 years!

Also, this is my third silver dime from this spot and they have been a silver rosie, Merc and now a barber.

I cant wait to get back over there and hit the new area more. Didn't find any clad or any modern trash, it was all old pulltabs and old cans.

Went back out this evening with my 12yo daughter to another spot IVe been saving for her as I had a really good feeling about it. Well, we only got to hunt for an hour before the batteries in my at pro went bad. So, only decent find was this token

token shows a deer head on one side with "play money" across the top and "Falsa ??cunia" on the bottom. The other side has a big "50" with "Uncle Sam ??49" on top and "Play ?A?? Buck" on the bottom. Made out of aluminum

UPDATE- ok, found out this is from an Uncle Sam play money set made in 1949. Pretty cool.

Thats a nice feeling.

I still haven't broke the mid 1800s yet. A few years ago someone asked me the oldest coin that I had found and I could only say it was an 1936 Mercury which I found on top of the ground while walking as a kid. He stated that that was old, but I think that he may have misunderstood and thought that I said 1836 or felt sorry for me. Up until a couple of years ago and when I started to REALLY work hard at detecting I had only found a commemorative token and it was only 1899.

Breaking into the 1800s is a great accomplishment. Another great accomplishment is finding any coin from the New Orleans mint. You crossed two barriers with one great coin, congratulations!

Barbers are getting harder to come by ,congrats on breaking into the 1800s. Silver to boot!

Awesome!! Ive only found 2 1800s coins since ive been detecting..as mentioned above..they are getting harder to find..great find!!

Congrats, broke the silver barrier last year myself with a 1898 Barber quarter, great feeling. More will come.

What a thrill to pull out that lovely Barber dime! :occasion18: :wav: :occasion16:

My oldest coin is a beloved 1923 Peace silver dollar surface find, yet after 3 years detecting I'm eager to break into 1800's --- especially as I turn green with envy each time my son digs his 1800's coins - his oldest is 1848 silver dime. HAVE FUN! Andi

That is great and gives me hope. I have permission to hunt where a one room school house stood back in 1876. The field is in soy beans now and as soon as the harvest I am going. Hope I find just one old coin.

congrats on your Barber, & breaking into the 1800's

Congrats in your 1st 1800s coin! Nice barber!

Good luck in your hunt. If you don't make a significant find, give it a bit and then go back, if you can. Every site I have hunted has given up something else my next trip.

You can never tell what is in the ground. You may find something much older then the 1870s'.
