Detector(s) used
Minelab Etrac & Quattro
In the middle of town is an old unused playground that has two baseball diamonds. The only thing it is used for anymore is a place to plow snow from around the elementary school and bus garage.
For several years I have gone there to learn my detectors. There is a ton of clad, and every manner of small trash you could ever wish for all in a mowed square field about 200yd square.

I have gotten mountains of clad, lots of junk jewelry, enough trash to fill my van, and over 30 wheaties. Never have found silver there, until last night.

Ran over to spend an hour learning more about my Sun Ray 5" coil on the quattro. Aside from 15 memorial cents, 4 dimes, 2 quarters and lots of small trash I found a silver '52 Roosie and a '56 wheatie. Not only the first silver there, but the first Roosie I've ever found.

Love that coil on the Quattro. It has really paid off in the last month since I got it. I hunt so many trashy sites, like the old fairgrounds.
What amazes me it that I am picking up solid coin hits at 10" to 12". The Roosie was only about 5" down, and spotless, but I picked out a memorial cent over 12" in good soft damp ground too.

Now I will need to spend a little more time out at the old playground to see if I can pick up any more silver.

Silver always makes a days hunt...betttterrrrr...Great job..Hope you find a lot more at the park.

Good for you- it was a matter of time. Now. got out and get the rest of the silver before someone else finds your site!

Nice going, mpostma!!

That 5" coil looks really small after you have been using the stock coil for a while. Then, when you put the stock coil back on, that coil is so BIG! ;D

Keep picking through that trash. I'm sure you'll find more. I've never worked a ballfield that had just one silver coin.

Congrats,

Sounds like a good site. Congrats on the oldies. I would take silver anytime.

Congrats on that first!!! 8) I'm sure you'll find more there!

Nana

Great diggings, Mark! Your new coil is a killer 8)

Thanks All!
Yes the coil seemed like a little toy on the end of the detector when I put it on! And again yes, when I put the standard coil on it looks HUGE! Thinking hard about a pro coil for the Quattro. I sure like that little bugger for trashy areas, but it sure seems like you don't cover much ground.

Thanks,

Mark

Congratulations. As the old saying goes no one gets it all. Get back out there and find more silver

Another nice Rosie grabbed from the turf! Nice Job and congrats... jgas

Thanks Allen and Freak.

Went out last night for an hour and came home with 47 cents in clad, and a pouch full of garbage.
Way it goes sometimes.

thanks again,
Mark

Good deal. It's a great feeling when you pull silver from a "silverless" site. :) I have a good explanation for your 30 wheats to 1 silver ratio - halo effect. There is one site that I have hunted that amazes me at how deep I find the wheat pennies. I have probably found 20+ wheats in this one area in which I have only found one silver coin. The only reason I found the silver was because it was in the same hole as a wheat!

Some sites the silver is just "out of reach" of the detectors due to the fact that they are dimes and very deep.

BTW - I had a Quattro for about 6 months. Found some great stuff with it but it was not good when it came to masking. Explorer is a better way to go but the Quattro can do well with smaller coils or less trashy areas.

Bob,

I have been doing pretty well in the trashy areas with the small coil. I am sure you are right on the iron masking issues with the Quattro.
This is my first year with it, and it is quite a step up from my older White's machine, but it has quite a "personality" in trash.
It is tricky and sometimes time consuming sorting signals in a trashy site.

My next machine will be an Explorer, or maybe the E-Trac, depending on how it does in the field.

Thanks
Mark
