Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

Some of you may have seen the pics of the new abandond farms I posted last night. I ended up driving through that area today while working, but didn't have a detector with me because I was supose to be in town all day. I stopped anyways because I had a little time to kill. I only got to check out a small part because I was taking my time, and was keeping a close eye on the stability of the floor & other things. The first thing I found is a leg hold trap. It is made by Onedia (sp?) and is a #4. it is bigger than it looks, and there is a piece missing that keeps it set. it even has teeth on it. I think it might look cool on the wall above a fireplace.
The next find made my heart come to a complete stop! I looked in a hole in the wall in what I think is the family/living room ( fancy room with a fireplace) and saw a tightly wound up ball of rags. As soon as I started to lift it out, I knew right away that there was something inside it because of the weight. Inside was a cap & ball revolver!! It was pretty well caked up with gunk. I have had it soaking in oil from the moment I got home (land speed record!!) and I have got a lot of the gunk off of it, but there are no markings, or numbers, or anything like that yet, but I am still working on it. It looks like it might clean up pretty nice.
If only this farm, or trap, or gun could talk........imagine the stories they could tell!!! I can't wait to get back there with my detector!!!

Paul,

Your revolver is a modern replica of a 1858 Remington New Model Army .44. The sights are the give away, they are manufactured in Italy (and probably other places), and have been for maybe 25 or 30 years. The originals never had sights like that one does. Still, it's a super find.

Who said the old sites were not in your area!!! That is an excellent story and find !!! I think you should go back and look at all the walls in that building, I think you may find a cache ,if someone left the gun they may have had a stash of money somewhere.....also I noticed the wood handle stock is missing may have been eaten over time by insects or deteriorated over time...You may lookinto having that gun reconditioned......just a thought....WTG 8)

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

When was the last time someone occuppied that home? I know that the replica craze started about 1960.....trying to date the gun ......

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

Paul,
Some cool stuff. Question though - Did you find the property owner and get permission? I was doing some detecting with my son this last weekend and we drove by an abandon structure. Of coarse he want's to know why we can't just go detecting there. I explain to him that every peice of property is owned by someone and you can't just go on people's property and take their stuff without getting permission. I must confess I did it once or twice - tresspassed on someone's property, stole their clad quarter and left. :D But I really don't feel very comfortable with it. Even if it has been abandoned for years. Only time I feel comfortable is with a new development or business going in (construction/public project).

Neat stuff! Remington makes a pretty potent solvent for cleaning up weapons like that. I don't think just soaking in oil will loosen the gunk. 3M also makes a cosmoline remover for vehicles that will probably work for you. Were there any grips on the gun?

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

Some years back, a client told me a story about his family placing caution signs that bear traps were buried in thier orange groves to catch people stealing oranges.

Supposidly, this was all smoke and mirrors, but it worked effectively.

Months later I happened be be at his home, and against a patio wall was a similar trap as yours, but as tall as me.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Pardon the pun, but that little guy would surely put a crimp in your day.

bear first guess or a wolf trap

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

I was going to say it was a Remington or a Remington copy, but the blue_ dog beat me to it. I agree with him. Monty

WOW, now those are some incredible finds there. I'm got a ton of old abandoned homes all around me. Maybe I should give it a go, very carefully though ;)

To the Hero Member,

Bear trap...the smaller versions were used for any smaller varmit or critter. In fact, they are still being used today.

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

WHOA!!! question overload!

Yes, I have permission to be there. If I don't have permission, I shoot a few pictures and move on.

The site is just outside Cashmere, Washington. It is not visible from the road, I was told about it by a friend.

The trap says it is a #4, which I am told is the size used for wolf/cougar. No wolves around here, but plenty of cougars.

A friend of mine that works at a car dealership recommended using what he uses at work to get cosmoline (sp?) off of cars. The stuff worked great! but it did burst my bubble though, it's a replica. The revolver markings say that it is a "Euroarms 1858 New Army Model .44 Cal, made in Italy" So hats off to Blue_dog22 on his knowledge of these. It is still seized up, but there is still lots of gunk. Even though it's not an original, I am happy to have found it. I am now wondering if I should contact the police, because it is considered a modern firearm (I think) and the owner of the property said that no one has lived there sense the early 60's (he thinks 1962) So it seems to me that someone possibly hid it there. any opinions on this?

I hope I covered all questions. I will post more pictures in the next few days of the gun, and trap. Hopefully I will get back to the site this weekend. I am suppose to go to Seattle to the Mother-in-laws, but I think I may have escaped that punishment. As soon as I go there again, I will get a bunch of pics ,including the insides.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Paul:
The trap you found has a pleasant surprise in store for you. It is an old Onida Newhouse and if you check on eBay and type in on the search- Oneida Newhouse No. 4 Trap with Teeth and check the completed sales and you'll see some pretty big numbers. They're very collectible. That size trap isn't quit as vicious as it seems and is used for beaver, otter and coyote sized animals and teeth are no longer used on modern traps. If you keep it or sell it, its a great find, Paul - Happy for you, pard.

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

I would not worry with turning it in to the police. It is a black powder pistol and can be purchased in most parts of the us with no permit and can be shipped to you with no back ground check. So even if it was used in a crime there will be no way to trace it. they will take your gun and most likely destroy it. >:( :-\

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

Very nice finds Paul. Found my first silver last weekend(a 56 dime really good shape) at an old gathering hall built in the late 1890s. Didn't have a lot of time left to detect but will be going back soon. Just be careful and take someone with you. Could be more traps. That could be painful. Wolves and cougars gnaw off their own feet to get out of them, I couldn't even imagine. There are a lot of places in your neck of the woods that were once booming towns that have been ghost for quite awhile. Should be a lot of abandoned houses or homesteads....

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

silverswede............boy, you wern't joking about the prices those traps bring......I was shocked! That's about the price of a DFX.

Re: Finds at the new site...including cap & ball revolver!!!!

Keep the gun. No way to trace it. The guy probably never cleaned all of the original cosmoline off the gun when he got it. You haven't mentioned if the grips were on it. Again, nice finds
