First Box of Halves EVER!!!

So I've been reading about this for awhile now, and decided to take the plunge. I went to my local Wells Fargo branch and got a box of halves. The teller couldn't have been nicer but the 2 supervisors kinda gave me the "stink eye" when the heard what I was looking for.

Is this normal?

I'm 3/5 of the way through the box and looks like a skunk. I swear if I see one more Bicentennial......Anyways, I'm going to have to dump these, and I have re-rolled them and plan on taking them to another Wells Fargo branch. Anything I should do or be prepared for ahead of time when I go to dump them? Also, any advice you all can give me on the hobby as well is appreciated. Thanks.

DO NOT TAKE THEM BACK TO THE SAME BRANCH YOU PICK UP FROM!!! I learned this the hard way even though the 2 banks are 75 miles apart!! Find another bank to dump on. :icon_thumright:

Many people will dissagree with me on this one...but don't let the tellers or bank personnel take advantage of you. YOU are the customer. Other than that, just search, search, and keep on searching. I've only been at this for a month or so, but every silver feels like the first.

And don't give up on the halves I was only a 6 skunk streak then I got a box that has 95% of the coins marked. I still managed to pull out a Franklin, 2 Walking Liberty's, 3 1964's and 3 40%'s. Anything can happen, but whatever you do, don't give up if you hit a little road bump.

P.S. Always be polite as possible and I wouldn't suggest dumping more than 1k at any one bank.

WOW!! Thanks for the heads up on that. I gotta ask, with all the "hassles" that seems to come up with this hobby, is it really worth it to go through all this? It's kind of discouraging to read of an ordeal like yours.

It is alot of work if you are gonna do serious volume. Just warning you now. The more work you put into it the more you will reap the rewards though...

You should seriously consider dumping at a different bank completely, not just a different branch of a pickup bank.

If they catch wind that you are dumping at another branch you could wind up being cut off.

I do all my pickups at Huntington and KEY and dump at my most hated banks...PNC!

You didn't really tell them you're looking for silver, did you? :icon_scratch:

Also, did they ask, or did you just volunteer that info? If they asked, then you make up a non silver story or just be as vague as possible, and if you volunteered it, then that's a huge mistake by you.

There are enough growing pains in this hobby without shooting your own foot.

All management will give you the "stink eye" when you ask for halves. A few things to make half buying experience better:

1) Go at a time the bank isn't busy. 5:00 PM on Friday usually isn't a good time to go CRHing for most banks.
2) Keep a good relationship with your tellers
3) When buying loose halves, always buy all they offer. When it comes down to rolls, there is a bit more room to only buy a few at a time.
4) Similarly, don't ask them to split a box. Tellers aren't going to like it when rather than having a box of $500 halves, they have to count each individual roll.
5) Accommodate the tellers when you dump. If the machine is in the back, don't bring a huge bucket filled with halves. Rather bring several smaller buckets, its simply easier to carry and dump, even if the amount is the same.
6) Realize which banks are good dump/pickup banks and which banks aren't. Some smaller banks simply don't have coin machines set up to deal with several hundred dollars in half dollars. Other banks do. Similarly, some banks stock a lot of boxes and have a lot of room and call in coin orders every week and make great pickup banks. Other banks will look at you odd if you even ask for a box of pennies.

I didn't mention I was looking for silver. No chance I'd be that naive. My guess is that I wasn't the first one to come through there either looking for halves or dumping halves.

UPDATE

I stopped by another Wells Fargo branch today at lunch. They not only took $300 in halves from me, they said they had at least 8 people who were DYING to get some halves. All 3 tellers there said me bringing in $300 in halves literally "made their day." I'm starting to think there may be too many fisherman and not enough fish. I'm dumping the other $200 tomorrow. My first box was a true skunk, unless you count the $.50 I made when they counted a roll wrong.

Is it worth it to search quarters, dimes or nickels or just stick with halves and hope?
