First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

I went back to that property today that I have been detecting the last 2 weeks. I was there for about 6 hours and probably dug about 150 pieces of trash. I didn't find ANY keepers for the first 2 hours. If anybody can please tell me more about the button and if the bullet is civil war. ANY info on any of this stuff would be great. I am really not too experienced in identifying things. OH YEAH, I had to get a close up of the religious medal because I have never found one with a date on it, have you all??

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

Looks like a CW Federal Infantry button to me.

Do you use rubber gloves when you MD?

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

I wear gloves as of a week ago. Hands stayed to dirty with the type of job I have. Now I wear gloves but they aren't rubber, they have some weird lining on them.

I can't tell much about the bullet without a size reference. If it's larger cal. it might be a Burnside...but I can't tell much about it yet due to the crustiness and size issues.

Actually, your button should pre date the civil war. Your letter I in the shield usually means it was worn by an officer and should have been about the mid 1850s. See page 37 to 39 in Albert's button book. Item 79 could be yours but I lean more to item number 85A. However you stack it, that was a very nice find and in very good condition. Congrads.

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

I beieve the item that you wanted i.d. on is from a single tree that attached between trace chains and a plow or other farm equipment. Nice button!!!

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

Nice button

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

Here is a link to an ask Mark Parker article that explains the significance of the 1830 date on your medal......although judging by the finds you dug at this location the medal might be from almost that far back. Scroll down to the one that says Sterling Faith. Like I said above though, yours is probably not nearly as modern as the one in the article.

I agree with this ID of the iron item.

The eighth photo is most certainly a suspender clip, and the seventh might be a decorative drawer pull or knob with the knob broken off--or perhaps a piece of an escutcheon plate.

No, no....Actually, the Letter "I" inside of the shield stands for "Infantry" and while officers DID wear them, so did enlisted men..BB was right....this is what is refered to as an "Eagle I" fittingly enough. In addition, I can tell you that the bullet looks strongly like a .54 Caliber Sharps but it is alittle hard to tell with the buildup that is on it.

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

The button is definitely a Union Infantry button. Nice finds. Looks like you've got a few harmonica reeds thrown in there also. I also think the bullet is a Sharps carbine.

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

Yes, the bullet is Civil War era..maybe the button too..that is not my cup of tea. Congratz on the finds though.

Re: First Civil War Button & Others Lot of Pics

All those medals of that type are dated 1820, Kevo. It's called "Miraculous Medal". It's the date when Mary appeared as an apparition in France. :icon_study:
