First day out at Corrigan's (Vero Beach, Fl) and came up with something that other TH'rs
said was a piece of the shuttle. Gave a reading like silver, but light weight and has a small
piece of copper thru the middle of it.
Tells me you used to have to turn the pieces in, but no more! Any one have any further
info?
Will post a photo tomorrow!

How cool would that be. I would love to find a piece of the shuttle or skylab or anything from space. Good luck, I hope it's the real thing.

I found a big piece of the space shuttle in Colorado!...Only missing the wheels. a little paint damage though...Probably from re-entry! But at least I have a crummy cell phone pic!

I still would like to see pictures..... ;D

I would have to see a picture to have any idea if it is from the shuttle or not.

If it is indeed a portion of the shuttle, it may very well be from Challenger in 1986. It is still a federal offense to have any piece of the Challenger wreckage. The same goes for any Columbia pieces found.

The only legal way to have a piece of the shuttle is to have a part that has been officially scrapped by NASA. Anything replaced on the shuttle is documented. For the parts of the shuttles that I have, I also have the documentation to back it up.

It is possible to have parts of Columbia and Challenger, but only parts officially scrapped by NASA prior to the missions in which the accidents occured. As for the wreckage, NASA has not scrapped, or will ever scrap, anything from those missions, so it still belongs to them.

P.S.>> To my knowlege, no part of Challenger has ever been found inland in Florida. The accident occured over the ocean so as far as I know the only pieces found by members of the public are those that have washed up on the beach.

Item was found at the low tide water line 100 yards south of the Turtle Beach Access off A1A in Vero Beach, Fl (Corrigans Wreck 1715).

MineLab Se registered silver, but it is not and extremely lightweight! Note Wire running thru it.

Old TIme Th'r on beach immediately id'd it as a piece of the Challenger (1986) and said although rare, peices have been found along the beaches of Central Florida thru the years and NASA is no longer interested in small pieces such as this.

Comments would be appricated! First time out in Years and if it is a piece of the challenger, it was a great re introduction into the hobby!

I was going to say, look for a serial number or ID number or the like, but no way you'll get one off that. Maybe its a piece of titanium? It could be, I'm sure parts of the shuttle are made from it. One way to test, is to grind a piece of it on a grinder, it'll produce white, hot looking sparks instead of the soft yellow ones from steel. Not sure I'd do that though, if theres a chance it could be from a shuttle, better to let someone else here throw their idea in first.

I saw a lot of shuttle Columbia 5 years ago this week when it rained pieces over my town and favorite fishing lake in east Texas. Will never forget that.

SHERMANVILLE

ummmm...I would be getting there QUICK to do as Sherm says.
If it is in fact a piece of the shuttle and you get caught with the sucker and they see you suspected it...bango! Well, if what they are saying is true that it is a federal offense. I would get your but down to NASA and turn that thing in, or at least get someone there to say it's not a piece of the shuttle.

doctorbb,
Does that make detecting difficult? I would assume THrs are finding all kinds of pieces of that thing if it "rained pieces" over the town. You find em and turn em in?

Had a local fellow who has found and forwarded pieces to NASA in the past tell me, first, that it is a shuttle piece and
second the small pieces that they forwarded in the past were no longer wanted by them (Challenger Pieces such as this).
Going to send out an email or letter in any case to cover the backside.

Interesting return to a hobby I have been away from for many years! I look forward to many more interesting and rewarding
finds and from the input of the crew here the ability to learn alot from asking!

And pictures with every find from here on!
