Got out for a quick hunt today and found my first farthing. It's very ugly but I'm happy to check off a first. I also found what looks to be a very old key. I had found another copper at this site a few days ago but it's the worst I've ever seen. I've been hunting in all metal lately and have pulled some deep keepers from sites that I and others have hammered. I'm really getting used to it and am realizing that there's a lot of very deep stuff that I've been missing.

I also recently found and returned this ring. Met Stephen Sunday and he was pretty psyched to have his class ring back.

Sometimes the coins dont come out of the ground the way you would like them, but still goods finds the merc looks good..

I agree the Merc Look's good. & Toasted "Old" coins are better than no old Coins.

Yeah buddy! Let's see em. And where the hell are my lobsters at. I wanted em today lol

Sir, may I suggest an imposed limit of time to which master Vino may produce the aforementioned Farthings and lobster?

Oh I love your posts sometimes lol. Yes my good sir! I am in full agreement. Aforementioned farthings shall be posted no later then 8:00 pm on this fine day of November. As for the lobster I shall give this peasant until the 8th day of May in the year 2015. Since he is afraid of a little bit of cold weather....big baby!

I didn't make that pic, was already out there, but was the type of thing I was looking for. I don't even know what the purpose was... restaurant maybe.

great job on the first farthing (that's one more than I have found) and KUDOS for returning the ring..I'm sure I would have been psyched to get it back too!! good stuff...ddf

Everyone is talking about the coin, but that old iron key is pretty cool too!

Yeah I'm really liking the key. Def my oldest. I've found a few early brass skeletons but this one is nice and early. Got it in the ACV right now

Great job Abe. Explain your all-metal mode hunting. How are you setting your threshold and are you manually ground balancing? Are you doing it in iron-y sites?

Glad you asked, I was wondering too. Whenever I have tried all metal with my T2 SE it made me crazy with all of the 1 tone signals. I can see using it on a "dig it all" site but an early homesite - not too sure. Abe, tell us your secret.

After watching one of Beau Ouimettes videos I've been setting mine up the same way. He first goes I to the disc menu and cranks the sens to 99 and the disc down to 0. He then goes to the all metal mode and cranks the sens up to the mid 90s. And yes a manual gb with threshold a little on the positive side(so you can hear it a bit). I have no idea why he sets it up with the disc mode first but he swears it makes a difference and I don't question that guy lol. The sites I have used it at have proven that I've been missing some deep targets. And yes I have started using it on trashy and irony sites. I'm finally getting used to it. It will give you a headache eventually though. And you absolutely have to keep one eye on the vdi. I'm always learning and open to any suggestions but I have been very impressed with the all metal set up. Some of the finds at some of the depths are pretty impressive

Thanks for the explanation on how you set up in all metal. My standard setting are in discrimation mode: Sensitivity 80, Disc 5, 2 tone and auto ground balance every 5 minutes or so. For me this allows me to concentrate on the high tones without nulling a lot over iron. I might try your method although it would be exhausting. Sorry to go off topic. Awesome finds BTW!

Your disc settings are very similar to mine. Trust me it takes awhile to get used to the all metal. It still gives me a headache after a bit. I think I'm convinced that if possible you should go ahead and hunt the hell out of a site in disc then go over it in all metal and see what you may have missed. I did that at a site where I found 32 colonial buttons and I pulled 6 more after hammering it in disc mode. It is significantly deeper and is awesome for nice old non trashy sites

I'm going to say Crusader. :laughing7:
The majority of UK detectorists have probably dug them , but 99% of copper coins suffer badly from the heavy crop spraying, it's really hard to get any detail, especially on farthings.

The key is actually iron so I'm not sure how well it will clean up. Might throw it in some ACV and see what happens. Happy with the farthing. If love to find a nice one some day
That key should clean up pretty good, shame about the farthing :sadsmiley: just like the ones we find here, I hardly give them a second glance now, because of how they come out the ground.

This area is on the waters edge and is very wet dirt, almost mud. I think sitting in that moisture all this time destroys the coppers. It's strange that 3 of the nicest coppers I've found have come from the edge of salt water. A couple of them from islands on tidal rivers. I figured the heavy salt content would destroy the coins but it seems that these areas never got the fertilizer that most sites had. These areas were settled by fishermen and not farmers. I certainly wish my first farthing was nicer but I'm glad I could see something. I'll found a better one someday

Nice going on the farthing bud. Those are definitely hard to come by down this way. Good luck on Sun.

You'd think we'd see more of those dug with them being smaller change, and even a smaller coin to lose, but that is not the case. They must have minted far fewer than the halfpennies. I have found a George I,II, & III and that's not really that easy. If anyone on here has William & Mary right to George III I would be impressed!

You're right IP - coppers are very hard to come by down this way too, especially those very elusive farthings. Off the top of my head all I can remember digging are a couple of KG2's and one nice Charles II. We don't have a field day with halfpennies either, as I'm sure you know.

Great digs, ugly or not, getting a coin that old is always great! and that's cool you found the owner of that ring.

Great job!
