Yes I agree with the hat badge. Nice find. Congrats!
It is not a cap badge as you say its more solidly made. However, if it is a box cartridge piece its not 1812 because the Crown is VICTORIAN.Ok, I know this! It is a Revolutionary War period cartridge box badge. Used to hold the flap down on the box. The War of 1812 pieces were made of stamped brass and yours is cast! They are VERY VERY RARE. The Shenandoah Valley had one or more POW camps in it during the Revolution. J - E - A- L - O - U- S.

YEAP - My mistake, I knew it wasn't 1812. The crown looked more Victorian, but Rev War is way better!
