First nickel box

Did my first nickel box tonight. Found tons of pre 1960 nickels. Only one silver 1942 P one though. I also found a cool $1 Mexican coin with the two different metals. Is it normal to find so many pre 1960 nickels in a box? I had to have at least 30 or so.

Yes, I find about that many pre-60s in a box but I do not keep any.

I searched my first nickel box in a while over the wknd and I got almost the exact # of pre-'60 Jeffersons u did. Unfortunately I didn't find any silver or buffalos but I found 29 pre-60 Jeffersons including 5 x '39. I thought I hit the jackpot in the first roll when I saw a 1950.....but unfortunately no mint mark. I got another nickel box today for Christmas so Im hoping for a little silver and maybe a buffalo or two in that one.

Doesn't sound out of the ordinary. Certainly you'll find boxes with more pre-60 nickels. Congrats on the war nickel.

I have done 150 boxes this year. look for 38,39 D&S, 50d,51s, 55 no mint, 49s, proofs, and any pre-70 AU to MS with full steps and windows as they will fetch around $1-$2 on ebay. my best box was 24 war nickels. still looking for the 50D and a handicapped buffalo.

I finished the box this morning (Had 6 rolls left) and found another 1942 Nickel but without any mint mark. From my research on the internet I have found that no mint mark means its not silver

No mintmark on the 1942 nickels means it is not silver and is minted at philly. Also keep in mind that ALL 1942D nickels are not silver either.
Good box, I think nickels are a great denomination to start out on!

Nickels are a lot of fun. Lot's to look for. 10-15 of the 30's, 40's and 50's are lower mintage but they do show up. The family enjoy hunting nickels more than any other denomination. Also find a lot of foreigns in there as well.

I also came within a 1970-S of completing my 1962-1995 book. I only got one Canadian, a 1986. Other items of interest. My first roll was 1 nickel short but had a 1980 copper cent. Didn't expect that from a sealed box of MWR. The 49th roll had a 1942 but alas no mint mark. My spirits were quickly raised on roll 50 though when I found my first ever buffalo. Dateless, but I was still pretty happy.

Congrats on your first buffalo. Its always nice saving the best for last. I was just searching some cwr nickels myself that I bought earlier today. I also found a '42 no mint mark but then in the next roll or two I found a silver '43P which was a nice surprise. I have a box of nickels to search tomorrow too. Im hoping for some more good keepers with that box too. A little more Christmas silver would sure be nice.

Btw, I was just taking a closer look at your buffalo pic and it looks like I can see a little bit of the date......looks like it might be an earlier date but I can't tell for sure. You might want to take a closer look at it.

The problem with keeping all pre 1960 or all pre 1955 Jefferson nickels is: You will find a lot of them.
Most nickel searchers put together a collection of Jefferson nickels from the wild (I still haven't found a 1939D or 1950D)
My suggestion is to keep all 1938 PDS, 1939 PDS, war nickels (of course), coins with less than 15 million mintage (1942D, 1946S, 1948S, 1949S, 1950 PD, 1951S, 1955), proofs, all Pre1960 that are XF40 or better.

There's also some pre-'60 Jefferson date and mint mark strike errors to look for that are worth a little money too: 1943/2 P, 1949 D/S, 1954 S/D, 1955 D/S and some of the dates have both small and large S mint mark varieties too....most notably the '40 & '41 I believe. Then theres the '05 buffalo error varieties also.

Btw, in the very next roll after I found that '43P nickel tonight I found 2 more silver nics in the same roll.....so Im having good luck with my nickels this Christmas.
