Hey all!

Today was my first day out with the Fisher F2 I got for Christmas and the second time i've ever been out MDing. Mulling around near an old well on a buddy's property we dug quite a bit of old barbed wire, an old "tin" container of some sort, and some other random junk. Then we got a coin hit on the F2. Ended up being a really worn Indian Head Penny!!!

The back cleaned up better then the front. You can just barely make out lady liberty, but the branches and shield show up pretty well in person. I think i can make out a date of 1884 but it's really a best guess as the date is REALLY worn. Any advice you guys / gals can give on cleaning would be greatly appreciated. I've tried simple green, warm soap / water, olive oil, & a rubber pencil eraser. The pencil eraser seemed to work the best but i'd like to try and bring the date out a bit better.

Thanks for the help!

It is, no doubt, badly pitted, however, the date looks to be 1880 to me. Going from what I can see of the picture on my computer, I can just about make out the inner circle of a zero. Have you tried magnification, like a jeweler's loupe? This detecting stuff is highly addictive.....with each find you get a real bad itch for another!

Whatever it turns out to be, congrats! I'm still looking for my first IH or Buffalo after over a year of looking. I have found a number of Mercs, but, no indians or buffalos, no standing/sitting/or laying Libertys, no silver dollars, no Barbers, but, a crap load of clad and pull tabs. I do have 15 silver and one gold ring, though.....averaging one a month!

wonderful first find!! welcome aboard and keep diggin

Lightly wet it with olive oil then turn the coin sideways and see if you can get the date to show better.

Roland, you are oh so right about this being an addictive hobby. I told Rob he was lucky to go this old this quick.

Good luck to you on finding some old stuff, now get out there and hunt some old spots.

Welcome to the hobby, Nice Indian

Good try with the peroxide, unfortunately while it does a great job on coppers it can't help for those that are corroded.
