Detector(s) used
Garrett Ace250
Well, for the last week or so, I have talked the talk on this forum...
So today, on a bitter cold morning, I decided to walk the walk!

I have had the detector for 2 weeks now, but not really ventured past my own garden. So this morning I decided to drive to one of my childhood haunts, which is a small area of woodland just a few miles from where I now live.

I only manged a couple of hours, as the cold was turning my fingers and toes into stone, but I still managed to find a few bits n' pieces, albeit nothing to blow anyone's socks off.

I discovered a really old motor cycle frame which appeared to be in quite good condition. Next time I'm over there, I'll take a picture and see if any of you people can identify it.

I really enjoyed my first expedition, despite the bitter weather, and it's not every hobby that allows you to come back home with a Mercedes, is it? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Get permission for those farmfields! There are Roman coins waiting and Crusader will have some competition now. :D

Hi Kirk, and thanks!

As it happens, I have been a keen fisherman for some years, fishing mainly on a river at a farm a few miles from here. This farm runs right alongside a Roman road in Staffordshire. (See Pic)

I am confident that the Farm owner will allow me to detect there, especially as I usually drop a bottle of good Scotch on his doorstep at this time of year, to thank him for allowing me to fish there!

As soon as Spring arrives, I'll be over there... watch this space! ;)

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT GETS BETTER FROM HERE..

Well, I gotta say, despite the wicked cold, being set upon by mad dogs, dropping my Ace 250 into something unsavoury, finding umpteen beer cans 8 inches underground, and leaving my cigarettes in the car....

....... it was a real hoot!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Oh .. Kirk....

We may have Roman History, but you got Shania Twain...

I am willing to swap my heritage if you can send her Fed_Ex.

;D ;D ;D

As kirk pointed out, get permission for the fields you talked about. Best time is after harvest. You can try the stubble of wheat/barley/corn but is hard work. Best time is a very short window of about 1-2 weeks. This is when they roll the field flat ready for drilling the new crop.

Next time wrap up like me. 2 pairs of thermal socks, 5 layers upper, 2 lower, fingerless gloves. I found it a lovely day, sun was out etc...

Tips for doing ploughed fields:
Look at the lie of the land, start on the high spots (next to the Roman road you will find very little, most of it is some distance from it)
Look for lumps, dips, mounds etc..
Get old maps from your local archive
Keep discrimination low, sensitivity high & dig all iffy signals these turn out to be roman coins

MOST IMPORTANT - Choose 1 field to cover & do it methodically, ie cover every inch, miss nothing. It maybe the 3rd day until you hit something but be patience and stick with it. If you completely cover a field with no good finds then cross it off the list & hit the next one. Do this & you will be successful :)

try the key -- in the car --- varoom !!! ;D

Forgot to say, close to the river will be very good. The ancient people worked the rivers & used them like roads.

Most of my best fields are close to the river.

Good point :)

I too was a very keen fishermen. However this hobbie has taken over. Much rather take home a Roman Denarius than a picture of a 20lb carp. Although I still fish from time to time. Soon I will do a bit of Winter Piking.

Thanks for the tips Crusader, appreciated. ;)

I still love fishing, but had most of my tackle stolen last summer from my shed. Not really had the heart to begin replacing it yet, but will do eventually.

Pike... my best was a 22lb fatty from a local reservoir. I'll hunt the picture out and post it in this thread at some point.

Hi Steve and welcome to TNet!!
Exciting stuff for sure. You live in a wonderful area.
I spent some time there in the mid 90's, in Tamworth
which is pretty close to you I think. I loved it there!
My company also has a plant in Telford, near you too huh.

I wish you the best of luck out there.
There's a learning curve but after getting the experience
under your belt, a lot of it will become second nature.

Happy holidays mate!

Smiles!

Thats a nice fish. Beats my 18.2lb from the river.

I have a shed but have always kept mine in the house for that exact reason. Probably junky b*stards. Sold them for a 10 bag of brown.

Happy Hunting.

Indeed... I happen to know who took the stuff, local chavs who have a reputation for shed crimes. Anyhow, it may not have been the right thing to do, but revenge is sometimes as sweet as sugar.
I torched their garden furniture one night before leaving the area. Made me feel so much better, I must say. ;D

Looking at the size of the head that fish in better condition would have tipped 30lbs. Nice.
