Detected a nearby city park today and found my first V nickel (1891 I think) right up under the base of a big oak tree, unfortunately it's nearly unidentifiable. Found a 1897 IH out top of the ground by a small tree that must have been planted to replace a larger one that died. The park has see a lot of action in the past judging by the number of fired bullets and spent casing I found: Two .32 cal bullets, a .40 cal hollow point with something white in it maybe plaster maybe bone, two .22 short casings, a 9MM luger case and a .38 S&W case. I don't think I'll go to this park at night!

Those are some pretty nice finds. Funny how V nickels rarely come out looking well. That IH is surely in nice shape though. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Those are two good finds there. Congrats. I need to find an old park like that.

Not gun powder, it's a fired hollow point projectile and the white stuff is jammed into the hollow point cavity!

take some extra fine steel wool to that nickel, it will clean it up. Its not like you are going to hurt it!!,LOL

I use the SOS pads with soap in them which works wonders. This was a tip from a friend. Can't get any pics to post right now but will try later.
