I just got it last week. took it to the lake this weekend getting familiar with it, found about 20 pennys in a couple hours, but thats it no silver lots of trash so i had disc turned up. so far i realy like it, was used to using my dad's xlt, which is a coin ace. I hoped to do a little hunting for nuggets in sothern oregon with my cz5 with a 5'' coil, was hoping someone had already wasted thier time and could give me some insight lol. now it needs to quit raining here in portland so i can get out again. thanks agian for all replys.

The mighty cz's don't care for small gold. Heavy gold rings...you will find.

The CZ 5 should do a respectable job of nugget hunting. Don't expect to find the really small stuff like an MXT, F70/75, XTerra 70/705 or the dedicated machines will find. It will get down to a couple to 3 grains or so and quite possibly have better depth on the big stuff. I used a CZ 6a up in AK's Brooks Range (heavily mineralized ground) a number of years ago and found a whole pile of gold with it. Went head to head with 2 guys using SD 2200d's and came out the winner by a small margin. The only other VLF detector that could be used in this area with any success was an MXT. ...Willy.

The Cz5 is a poor choice for nugget hunting, it will not handle the mineralized ground nuggets are generally found in and does not not have enough sensititive for small nuggets. Gold nugget hunting is the most difficult type of metal detecting there is. If you want to improve your chances of success use a dedicated nugget detector.

Sure it could pick up a pea-sized nugget, but most nuggets found in nature are pinhead sized, or grain-of-rice sized at largest. Pea and fingernail sized nuggets in nature are VERY rare. If gold-in-its-natural-state is your goal, get a dedicated nugget machine.

And as ironic as it sounds, you may *think* that a dedicated nugget machine, designed to be seeeooo sensitive that you can fine teensy things like that to respectable depths, would/should make it a great coin machine, right? (afterall, you won't miss ANYTHING, right?). But the opposite is the case. You would go crazy going to the average urban site (park, lawn, demolition site, ruins site, etc...) because every single pinhead, bread-tie-twisty, birdshot, staple, etc... would be blowing your ear-drums off

Thanks all for the info. I guess I will save my $90 for the 5'' coil for the cz and put it away for a gold machine instead.

I have had my cz 5 for about 14 yrs and i have had a xlt and traded it for a cz 20,you have a much better machine now. 13 years using the cz 5 with the small coil i think i can say this machine will find very small gold, and it will handle any soil you come across and for trashy areas, you have the best machine for it.If you can find a nugget the size of a bb ,thats alot better than spending all day chasing flakes .

I don't know where you nugget hunt, but in my part of the world if you tried to use a CZ for nugget hunting all you would get would be exercise. When I started nugget hunting the only detectors available were coin machines and I did find a lot of nuggets with them. Things are a lot different now, the easy gold is gone and nuggets are a lot harder to find, you need every advantage you can get A CZ may find a pea sized nugget on the surface, but most nuggets are deeper and smaller and the CZ won't penetrate the mineralized ground. Everyone likes the larger nuggets, but the truth is there are many many more smaller pieces than large ones and they do add up. I know because I have many ounces of them.

I miss my old CZ-5 that thing in "autotune" would find things as small as BBs and tiny tiny little gold, smaller than BBs earings, I know this for sure, used the CZ-5 for many years, as long as you manually ground balance it correct, it is one kick butt machine!
