Same hunt in freshwater pond. Found this 1931 three pence (holed) and this other object. It seems to be a flattened penny but seems too heavy. Thought it was a dog tag at first. I think I found another one before. Guess I'm hoping it is an old copper but it isn't round enough it seems.

I'm thinking it could still be a 17th to 18th century halfpenny, just in warped shaped. Any kind of design or lettering visible at all? To discern buttons as opposed to coins, I kinda go by feel-- a copper coin usually feels too dense to be a button and a button too lightweight to be a coin (if that makes sense).

I would say it is way too big for a button as well. It cant be a flattened penny for we all know what those sovenir ones look and feel like.
There may be some faint lettering on it but it is otherwise very smooth. I wonder about the lack of corrosion (it was under water in sand) an possibly the shifting sands have cleaned it and sanded it down over time to its smooth condition.
I'm interested in peoples experiences with coins being worn smooth in lakes or ponds with little wave action.
I'll also take a look at the dimension of this piece in comparison to a george half.
