After taking a long break from detecting (2)yrs because of back problems I felt good enough to get out for a little bit. was back in new jersey visiting family where i'm from, Salem co to be exact. I always use a hand digger but found out a small shovel was better on my back. anyways I decided to try a area called in the old days Pigs Eye outside of Salem. there was a field a short walk from my daughters house that just had soy beans cut down. about a half hour into the hunt I got a screaming hit and it was deep.i pushed the shovel down deep and pulled out a large clump of dirt and when I flipped it over I saw a large thick green coin. now thick usually means early so I got really excited when I saw the flowing hair. my first flowing hair, its not in the best condition but I will take it. about 15 minutes later my back really started to bother me but the adrenlin from the flowing hair kept me going.within another 5 minutes I got another strong hit a showing large cent on the screen.i dug a plug of dirt and out pop a 1794 cap cent in decent condition. wow, what a 1-2 punch.i also found a bridal roset but in the excitement lost it somewhere in the field.in all not a bad hour hunt.i will no doubt go back there later this month. thanks for looking.

great digs!!

That's a real beauty! Welcome back! No pun intended. :)

Very nice...Those early copper coins don't turn up often..congrats

I do believe that is a 1793 Wreath cent, based upon the shape of the head. Take a closer look and see if there is a trefoil of leaves above the date. Nice find, regardless!

The flowing hair/wreath combination was indeed from 1793. A great find regardless of condition, but it's so toasted I can't see what might have been on the edge (lettered or vine & bars). Lettered edge in AG Red Books at $900, Vine & bars in AG at $850, although dug coins' inherent porosity can't command those values. A great day nonetheless!

Very Cool! I know that must have been a rush!

Nice comeback

Nice finds, I don't live that far from you.

Toasted or not, you don't see that many Flowing Hair cents found with a metal detector. Congratulations!! 8-)

thanks for the kind words. what part of jersey do you live in. maybe we can share some places to hunt,i know a few here.

2 in one day? I'd call that an awesome hunt! Congrats :icon_thumright:

thanks CMD, I grew up there in the 1960's - 70's and moved from the area 2 years ago. it was a fun place in the early years and has a lot of great early bottles and glass. the coins and relics are a bonus.

Well if you are going to dig large cents, it might was well be those two! I'll use the b word... Banner for the flowing hair!

Awesome coin, I was in that area yesterday as matter of fact, and found a1793 capped bust in bad condition but you can make out the important details. Also found a large decorative tombac button.this area is absolutely beautiful, especially this time of year.Congradulations on your thrilling find, and hope your back feels better.ps I will post my coin once I clean it a bit.

Congratulations ! It may be toast but it's rare toast ! and a real piece of American history .

Make sure it's not a strawberry leaf variety!
Nice find!
