I only had it 1 week It Got stuck in some Clay while probing!

I Was in a new area at the time and was hitting coin after coin just lightly probing the wet ground with it I just pushed to far and it got stuck and i got distracted by the fishermen and women pulling out Trout that the state just planted in a park! kind of felt that it was stuck pulled it harder than i should have!!!!! im going to see if i can fix or modify it myself some of the wires are bent possibly broken inside Im very Handy a fixing things but I have had such nice weather i have been going out almost every!!!! THANKS FOR ALL THE POSTS CHUG

I know that people will disagree, I see some claiming they get good depth on these, but my own personal experience (and those of others) is that those automax things get at best a half inch on a coin. I hope you got it free or cheep. It is nowhere near the $140 or whatever they claim its worth. You can go over to harbor freight and buy something that performs similarly for $15. The best thing that ever happened to me with my Automax was it breaking.
The original poster (chug) probably had to probe with it in the ground like that because it had such a limited detection range. I see people claim 3" on those automax, but seriously, mine got a half inch on a half dollar. Anything small it had to be touching. Save up your clad you find and get something better like a garret pointer pro. I like my sunray probe. In the mean time go to harbor freight and get a centech pinpointer, just make sure to keep mud and moisture away from the button on the centech pinpointer.

with mine I get 1 to 1 1/2 range -- their clearly NOT strong enought to "push" probe with -- its a sure way to kill one .

Some how i broke my Whites Bullseye pin pointer the mirco switch inside came lose i called Whites they told me call there repair shop in Manassas Va. i did all i had to do is send the broken pin pointer and 9.50 plus shipping 2.69 and in 1 week i got a brand new one a 119.00 pointer that gets about 1-1/2 inches to 2 inches but it still cant beat the Sun Ray probe 4 to 6 inches ,Whites Great service !! Well that really bites!
If you have the cash I'd recommend the Garrett Propointer. It's light, tough, powerful and cheap to operate. I got mine this time last year and it's got to be the best accessory I ever bought.

i had 2 whites that were pure junk. bought the garrett and have never had a problem. it's a great pinpointer

why do you want a pinpointer to go 4-6 inches? your detector can tell you that

I'm guilty of lightly digging with my Vibra-Probe 570 here & there... the thing is built like a tank though, but I'm still careful not to put too much strain on it.

Had this same pinpointer, mine broke all the way down on the base where it comes out of the housing. Too much prying. Had the Whites Bullseye II, I think they sent me 2 before I got one that worked. Then when I did get one that worked it only lasted a year before the switch went in it. Now I got the Sunray Hopefully this one will last longer.

For the money I like the bounty hunter. It is strong & has a rounded point that allows you to probe with it. I can make a hole with a screw driver then probe with the bounty hunter & find the item. I have worn out one & am on my second, the tip is thin so I get some plastic repair bondo from the body shop & reinforce the tip. I was going to buy a garret because it has more depth than the garret but $140. plus it does not have a rounded tip.

That's what I did. I stepped on mine in the field.

On a later hunt I found the remains of a marine antenna. There were some short tubes that were the perfect size to fit over the broke probe. I used some epoxy putty to stick it all back together and it is stronger than new.

However, I always thought this pinpointer was too big and cumbersome to carry. I got a probe for my machine and I'm MUCH happier with that...
