I Believe this is Maysville KY ? it says about 40 Mile From Cincinatti,
but is about 65 Mile, 50 as the Crow Flys if it doesn't get sidetackd . It is on the Ohio Though

Bean pots buried atop coals in the morning , covered with soil and left much of a day were not uncommon.
Might have been a flat along the river long used for such. Or just comfortably convenient by coincidence?

Mark your buried pot. Sand dries out over a dry day and looks like dry sand like the surrounding sand.
Some sites sand below the surface changes appearance. Even after being dried on top of the ground it can clash. Easy enough to relocate a disturbed spot.
Along a river though the sediment layers can be deep.
All of which still has me wonder how / why they missed the bean pot first attempt.
(Losing the family dinner/bean pot would not be good. Or was a reason for coming into possession of the gold needed? )
