I like the bases on those triangulars you found and I had not seen that serrated point. Way cool Jamey. Glad you are back at it. I may metal detect sunday on my side of the mtn I think I may have a CW site figured out. Of course will hit some fields on the way home. This is a great post and hope you keep it rolling .Happy hunting and say hello to your river for me.

thanks chong.i belive it is the same stuff.the way the lines in it come togethor is a dead ringer.i dont know much about my collection yet but thank you for posting that.the red arrowhead was found by the knife, you have any of that there, and if you dont mind were you at.the knife is really wheathered and has a green moss like stuff on it,but i know its the same stuff, havent seen anymore of it here.thanks so much chong jamey

Jamey, I first found two small flakes of the material a few days apart, at a large camp site, and i was thinking to myself, i hope they made something out of this material. Then a week later, i found this larger chunk, after finding this i knew they did make something, and now i hope to find it ;D This material was found in New Mexico, i have been in the desert my whole life and have never found any material like it, thats why i got excited when i saw yours. I wonder if they treasured it for the pattern, and thats why i see so little of it here, Maybe someone can identify it and where it comes from for us. I would love to find a knife like that of what you found, ill let you know if i get it identified.
p.s., i also used to detect all the time, but now it stays at home, for some reason i like prehistoric so much better :D

Jamey the material in your blade is just called tan striped chert. We have dover chert fort payne chert,Buffalo river chert(red),Hornstone, horse creek, This is all called chert I know we call everything flint lol but its really chert. Here is a link to see some like you have http://www.geocities.com/tnpoints/points1.html of course we have a lot of rocks inbetween like quartz and greenstone. Not sure what he has could be???

tnmountains, thanks for the reply, but the pattern in his knife seems to be more like the material i have and neither look like the tan striped chert as pictured in the link.

jamey- Those are some nice finds, I know people who have looked for years and not found a single one. I've found very few, but I'm hooked. When you think about the amount that has been found post contact with europeans, It makes you wonder what it looked like in the places they lived. Did the points and all the flakes just lay around like gravel? I hope your collection continues to grow quite large. The pipe is really cool, even if it isn't as old. "Wood" love to find something like that.

Yep, I think you are right it does not look like the one in the link. Sorry. I have some like Jameys somewhere but cant seem to put my hands on it so I tried to find a pic of local material. It is some neat material whatever the heck it is. Jamey is on the artifacts

thanks nature girl,i have seen big piles of napped flint but i hardly find a good point around them, they were making them there not throwing them around at those sites.ive got alot of miles in them points and remember were each one came from.some were just laying on the ground others barley visable.if you find one look real hard around the spot because if they were hunting there it is very possible that many threw or shot at the same animal at the same time because i came upon a bank that had four arrowheads in it.do not know enough about them yet to see if they are made at the same time,or if it was just a hot spot for the animals to hang out.this is all i found this past weekend, the water is going back up and the season round here is just about over but it was a great first for me.
chong id like to see if there is a connection with the stuff you and i have it looks so close.maybe they brought it there from here?let me know if you find more of it or if it is known to be in your area, that tn mountiain fella is pretty sharp and glad he gave my post some thought, jamey

Welcome Jamey and thank you.Thought I might give you my 200th post onT-Net as your post has been the most interesting to me.From what I remember as a kid that river(yours) got pretty low in late summers.I guess its damned below it now.Maybe its like the tenn river and rises and lowers with generating schedules?. Look forward to our hunt this summe over here. Stay on it the season is just getting started. The site I MD sunday was just 1800's so far no CW yet still hopeing.Later Jamey.

hey there tn mountain, the water is really comming up fast, just a week ago i found a deep spring that i could see fish in,good size ones but took the kids to try to catch one and the river done covered it up.i knew you were just dreaming of the stones river site.i started reading your post but you had so many pictures my computer stalled, lol.im going to look at it again.yes im looking forward to the hunt also, told the kids about it also.chong got some good ones didnt he?i looked at the flint garden today picked one up but didnt find it in my pocket when i got home :icon_scratch:hopeing its in the car.yea they put up a dam and let the water drop pretty low for winter pooling but that has come to an end.everyones sites are getting covered now. jamey

Jamey,
What about plowed fields near the waterways? In my area, that's where the majority of our points are found (or I should say at least that's how I find most of mine). Typically, immediately after harvest, the farmes plow the stubble under. At that point the dirt yields its booty, however, it's not until a good rain or two comes to wash off the thin layer of top soil. Then, it's a free-forall in the popular camp sites. No doubt there is a lot of material still laying around otherwise, but with the prairie grass, it's difficult to see. Interesting to see and hear the different hunting methods of collecting artifacts. For a first year, you've done a remarkable job. Look forward to bigger and better things next year.
docmann
