Hi all,
Haven't been on for a while, because of no detecting time. Well tonight I had about an hour to detect so I hit my old standby place. I have recovered a couple of nice buttons and good coins from this place, the best being a 1864 2 center. I started swinging and found a few memorials, the ususal junk and then I hit the band uniform button,my second from this site. I then had a hit that wasn't to stable, jumped around a lot. About 6 inches down,I pulled out a coin, didn't have my glasses and my arm wasn't long enough to see what I had. I seen part of a wreath and thought it was an Indian. I stuck it in my pouch and continued swinging.
Detected for another half hour and headed for home. All the time thinking that coin just didn't seem right, there was just something different about it. Got home, washed it off and just about pooped! It's a 1858 Flying Eagle! Never in a million years did I think I would detect something like that! I was stoked and still am pretty excited. I hope eveyone has the opportunity to find one.
Happy hunting all,
Steve

That is one beauty of a coin! I have seen a few Flying Eagles posted here, but never in that condition!!!

I would give it a bath in HOT hydrogen Peroxide and gently wipe it down with a wet Qtip !!!

Amazing find!

That's one nice flying eagle cent, Steve...WTG Dude! :D

great find the eagle --the buttons no slouch either --looks like an irish harp type might be civil war irish group esp if found in the area with the coin---the dating of the coin means it could have been carried in the civil war era---Ivan
