found a great axe head (pole axe)

This appears to be a late 18th century example.
The first photo is as found the rest are after removing some excess material

At this point I only removed material that came off easily it was mostly a hardened sand and mud type material.
I just used a small screwdriver and a small rubber mallet.. Will be using electrolysis for the rest

It should display nicely with this piece found at the same site.
A lot of pain staking cleaning went into this one.. It was almost completely cocooned



when I found it.. Here is the handguard section after I chipped away a piece to see what was in it.. The hardwood handle was much more difficult.. I removed several thin pieces of deteriorated brass and clean them separately adding them back on when I was done.. The missing section of hilt is still out there somewhere.
