Found a sheld nickel! How should i clean it?

Found this today and I figured out that it is a 1866-1867 because of the rays on the back. I was wondering if I should clean it and if so, how?

In my opinion, if you try to clean it you'll loose what detail you have left.

I agree , there's probably not enough to work with there . At least you can cross another "type coin" off the list !

Leave it!!!! Anymore you will lose more detail..nickels dont hold up well...trust me ive mess alot up...

I think it is a 66 I wouldn't try to clean it any more but you could wax it it could help it from falling apart and bring out some detail

I just use Chapstick. It works great. It will bring out some detail & seal it.

I put the coin in a spoon and put the spoon over my gas burner for a few seconds to get the coin hot then I put a little white candle on it to melt over the whole coin. While the coin is still hot I take it out and rub it with a rag so that all that's left is a thin film of wax.

Try dusting it with Talc based baby powder (not corn starch) and rubbing it gently.

Looks like my 1867 and 68 nic ...Can't do much with them I just put mine in the coin holder... But they are my oldest coins!

In over 30 years of detecting I've only found 2 shield nickels. Nice find. Not much you can do to clean it or you might loose the detail you have.
