Any help with this object would be appreciated! I've seen a lot of rusty items in the past but this one has me stumped. It seems to be an old spike or bolt with an interesting splaying of the iron fibers. The metal (magnetic) seems to wrap from the shaft to and along the head of the object. It was located in a cove beneath a large rock about 12" beneath the sand. It was a mess when it was found, covered with rust and part of an old steel cable was thought to be attached. After soaking in vinegar for a few days and about 12 hours in an electrolysis tank it cleaned right up and the rust and cable detached. I don't thin the cable was ever attached to it, perhaps it just rusted and solidified beside of it while settling along the rocks. Thanks for any info.. Nice cleanup. That is neat whatever it is.
It reminds me of cable that was forge welded together and than made into or used as a stake.

Edit

The more I looksee, could it be the end of the cable that was installed in some sort of fastener or binding, some sort of turn buckle?

Initially, that's what I thought, particularly since the cable was attached just below the head and perpendicular to the shaft. Thanks for the info..

It's possible.

That is a forged pin...that is what the steel looks like when exposed to salt water...

Yes, hand-forged pin. Iron does take a beating in the salty sea...!
Cool item when cleaned up like that...! :icon_thumright:
