I was heading to hunt a early house site that has produce 2 1774 KG, a bunch of pewter buttons, and trade axe!! and also random Civil War relics.. well.. decided to hunt the highest hill as I am walking back to the ruins. There were some camps close by looked like it might be a good spot for a picket post. About 1/2 up the hill I spot a bottle laying in the leaves.. then another.. so on and so on.. so I put down the machine and start digging them out. Spent 2 1/2 hours digging.. lots of roots!! but pulled 30 bottles out of the pit and I am sure there are more... the funny thing is the trash pit is really far from either house on the property and in a strange place on the side of the hill.. not easy to get to?? One is pontiled.. a few applied tops the rest are seamed.. but hey.. I'll take them!!

Here is the link to my only other bottle trash pit http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,74980.0.html

MonkeyBoy,

very nice.

"the funny thing is the trash pit is really far
from either house on the property and in a
strange place on the side of the hill.."

Would put money on it that at one time some
type of road was on that hill.

Again nice group of bottles.

wow, some nice looking bottles, congrats!

Sweet bottle finds! I can't wait til the snow melts and I can finally get out for the first time this year. Happy Hunting!

Jackpot....those are some very nice bottles. I would be looking for some type of foundation or root cellar on the side of that hill.....great finds!

Nice work! That's an EXCELLENT payoff for such a short amount of time spent doing the digging. Makes the frustration of the tree roots MUCH less when such beauties as those are coming out of the ground!

Sounds like there was another house on the site--probably up the hill from the dump. I hope you can pinpoint its location, because folks didn't walk their garbage very far to throw it out.

I did!!! The woods are very sparse.. I have hunted there once before.. a quick walk through on the way back to my jeep.. dug one 3 ringer.. but I searched yesterday pretty hard.. the area use to be field.. right up to the edge of the hill, you can even see how it was leveled off some and there are places were the field stone were dumped cleaning out the fields.. but no house site! The closest one is about 500 or 600 yard away.. pretty far for a dump.. there is another older hose site even farther away. This one is puzzling.. almost no iron or trash anywhere around the trahpit!! Maybe I found the trash pit of a very neat person from the late 1800s?? maybe a little later. I need to date the bottles.. and go back with the proper tools! I only found one iron piece, looks like the bottom of a oil lamp maybe?? I just have visions of some poor guy 100 years ago "Did you take out the trash dear?" "yes.. I .." "..and don't you go dumping that close to the house!! I want it hauled off!!" " yes dear" ;-) It is a pretty big area, so I could have missed it.. but given how late the trash pit is.. seems I would have found house site relics somewhere?? Only thing to do is keep hunting!! This is becoming one of my favorite places, small Civil War camp up front, close to the main road.. produced a few nice finds.. a 1900 +or _ trashpit with some nice bottles.. and a very early house site way in the back of the property that has given up a few 1700s coins and tons of nice spun pewter buttons and a trade axe!! Has a little bit of everything!! Can't ask for more then that!!

Thanks!! I was pretty happy!! This is the weird part.. nothing around that says housesite!! I did a short hunt expecting to find typical housesite trash.. but nothing!! I'll go back and circle out further and further. It was not even at the apex of the hill, like what you would expect if they backed up a wagon and dumped it either?? Didn't have my camera this time, but I'll take it next time just because this is an odd one!!

I love old bottles. I used to know a few good places around Ohio close to where I live. I know where 2 are but I don't know who owns the land now.

Very nice bottles Monkey Boy. I'd stop detecting to dig those too.
I love the looks of old bottles.
Congrats to you & thanks for the post/s.

I'd love to see it. I've had those odd sites too--some of 'em the mystery was solved, and some not. Either way, great bottles in the meantime.

Well.. I went back yesterday.. my back was warning me not too!! but did I listen.. noooooooo!! Anyway.. found 6 more bottles.. there was good size tree 10 feet or so "up" the hill from where I found the bulk of the bottles.. on a whim I started pulling the dirt from around the upturn roots and pulled three more bottles!!! so the total size of the trashpit is getting pretty big.. I'm sure there are more given the size but was just not up to it yesterday! Sucks... having herniated disk at 41!!! So I took it easy and start hunting.. the whole thing makes sense.. this is off of farm fields and a little bit away I found newer dumps.. and yons of field stones from when the fields were farmed.. so looks like they hauled the trash a great distance from the existing house.. these are not part related to the original house on the property.. mid 1700s.. but from the later one circa Civil War. I dig find a colonial copper... still soaking.. now I need to find the trash pits from the 1700s house!! Loved to get 32 bottles out of that one!!!!

I'd post pis but just more of the same bottles.. nothing new... 3 of the early Bromos.. but hey.. cool blue!!

Sounds like you have a dream place to hunt..... Dang nice bottles!!! If you don't mind can you tell me what it says on the bottle on the lower left??? Congrats on the copper too!!!

Nice bottles, I would like to do some privy and bottle dump digs myself.

Nice bottle pit there. I've never found a pontil. Good luck on cleaning out the rest of the pit.

Love em!! ;) I have not found a bottle dump in years. :'( Looks like you are going to have to get a new display case.
