Hi all,

This is kinda a sad topic but I did find something. My grandfather past away a few months ago :( (RIP). I was at his house with some of my other family bored and was thinking... He liked the state hood quarters he must have other coins somewhere. Something told me or I had this feeling to look on top of my grandfathers, Grandfather clock. Sure enough I found 7 dateless buffalo nickles he must have collected from his pocket change. I also found in the house somewhere else a pouch with 2 more buffalo's and a few other good suprise finds....

PS: If someone could ID the First coin and what its made of, that would be nice.

Well here are some pictures !!

Keep @ it and HH!!

Great find! God rest his soul - looks like you inherited some of his coin collecting genes!
Well, he was a kid at heart if he hung onto his Chucky Cheese coins too, ha, ha!

I get the feeling he left them up there to give to you, or knowing you would be the one finding them.
good score, this winter cabin fever has me doing some research of places for us to hunt, Cant wait for that tax check so i can get my new toy.

I looked through the house good, could be more I guess. I don't think we was that into collecting just, statehood quarters and some buffalo's. Maybe more, ??? I'll check again when I have the chance. My grandfather was the real handy man. He built all his houses from scratch, the original one I wish I had the chance to hunt. It was on Church Road in Bethill Park in Pittsburg PA the land that is now house after house after house, apartment buildings, churches, schools, Starbucks and pizza joints. Was when he built the house was all.... Farm land. All the silver in that house would have been his, his families and friends and his 10 kids.

We will likely have to sell the house we are not the richest people so keeping it would be hard. My grandmother is to old to live in it alone. I say rent if anything but they will likely sell it.

Keep @ it and HH!!

most older people I've known kept tins of silver coins. when my grand father passed years ago we found a money bag full of old silver coins. he used to keep two silver dollars in his pocket. i asked him why he carried them and he told me that when he was young if a cop stopped you on the street and you had no money on you they could arrest you for being a vagrant. i'm sorry about your loss!
BIGHEAD

Sorry for your loss.

Both my grandpas told great stories. I miss them, too.

Mud,

Check all the doors for slots to drop coins into.
Hollow core doors are the perfect piggy bank.

See if there are any loose bricks anywhere to stash thing behind as well as loose floorboards.
Look for false toekicks in the bottom of kitchen cabinets and false toekicks on the stairs.
False bottoms and backs in the fire place.
Check out dirt floors in the cellar for old digs as well as cubbys and stash holes in dark corners.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Sorry to hear about your Pop.
But if you can think the way some of the old timers thought you will find most of his stash.

Good luck

Well at least he left you something. A nice herd of Buffalo's.

So sorry to hear about the loss for your family! :'( that is a beautiful herd of buffalo you posted. Hope you find some more, those are some precious memories!!

my uncle was a great packrat and when he died I was left out of the will ...long story but family
and so called friends messed me over..however...

Grandmaw ( his sister) told me of two places where the emergency stash was at...so if something
happened to her..it was mine.. a couple of years later he died..and after all the crying and fighting
was over with ...

A few weeks later while cleaning out his house my sisters called me up and told me that anything
in the front yard was mine..I went and got all kinds of junk to them ( hundreds of old books, china
dolls, lace doilies and things from the late 1800's, hundreds of old keys -- the list goes on and on..
9 pickup truck loads...I had a spare bedroom full of *junk*

Then to show their good will they gave me the keys to the house and told me to watch over it..
so...I went to the secret spot a few days later and even invited the lawyer handling the estate with
me ...
in three 50 caliber ammunition boxes from WW2 ( uncle was in that one) ..we got bearer bonds,
jewelry, cash and a lot of coins...the lawyer told me..you keep the coins and some of the cash..
and then asked me..do you want anything else...I said anything I find in the safe in the ole fireplace..
he said there is no safe in the fireplace..I laughed and we went there and got a nice steel chest about
8" by 6" by 3" and in it was some more cash..not much but it was cash.. the fireplace had not been used in 40 yrs ...but a little secret compartment was there...if you knew where it was

all in all I got a nice chunk for the dolls and books on ebay...and still have the silver and gold and
a few other things that was in the boxes...and cases...and the feeling that I was honest and did not
mess anyone over like I was ...

Moral of the story ...if you think you are getting a good deal..you usually arent ..

and dont think that older folks are not thinking ahead..they always are..especially ones that went
through hard times..

sorry for your loss maybee gramps knew you would look there to find them? i am originally from vestal ny outside of binghamton how's the weather? se fla now.

Thanks everyone,

Cool Story Cazar, I guess he could have hidden more its a modern house. Designed by my dad and built by his brothers and sisters and us. I never thought of him as a pack rat but its possible. In all likely hood if he has something one of my aunts found it already. I will look again though just in case.

Thanks again everyone,

Keep @ it and HH!!
