Finally got out for a few hours today.
I think my ace250 is starting to die or something. Put fresh batteries in it, have the sensitivity on 4 and getting a ton of false signals. I'm wondering if one of my two daughters dropped it or knocked it over. I dunno anyway. This is the best of today out at my farm. I also found a kinda cool old train car, and a 1944 wheatie.

Any thoughts on cleaning it up? I really have no experience cleaning old coins. The only other old coin I found that was worth cleaning was a 2 cent piece and that came out of the ground in pretty much perfect condition.

Not bad. I like indian pennies. I wish I found them more occassionally.

Nice IH :o You might check the cable on the Ace. If its loose, it can cause false signals.

Nice Indian, Congrats!

Hot peroxide worked on mine....

Hey, why don't you post a pic of the train car if you can. Lots of us like to see that kind of find, too!

ask and you shall receive

I guess its worth a little something.

It's a 1869 and I can read all the details on it. Same go on ebay right now for around 100$. By for the highest priced Item I have ever found. Well in my 4 months of detecting that it is.
Think I'll try an olive oil bath on it for quite awhile. Doing anything else to it kinda scares me.

If it is worth that much don't clean it with anything other than olive oil. Great finds

Man, great find! I really like peroxide for my ohio Indian Heat cents. It is actually pretty gentle. I soak for a day or two, take it out and check the progress every once in a while and gently rub it with a Q-tip. For stubborn chunks of corrosion I use a tooth pick to pick the spots off then rub the area with a Q-tip to finish it up.

Good Luck!

If I wanted to ebay it, should I not use peroxide?

I've started a fund to upgrade from my ace 250 and this would be a nice addition to it.

If it were mine I definately would, but the choice of course is totally yours. What I would do first is take a worthless wheatie with about the same appearance corrosion wise and try the peroxide method, to see if you like it. That way you lost nothing either way.

Awesome 1869 Indian Head Cent!!!!!!!!

Nice Indian! Thought I would chime in with some cleaning tips. First, If you use olive oil on it you won't be able to do anything else with it at that point, the oil will stop the cleaning process of any other method. Second if you choose to use peroxide (my chosen method) you first heat about a quarter inch of it in a small plastic container in the microwave. Get the peroxide boiling which only takes 20 to 30 seconds. Add the penny at let the peroxide bubble the crud off for about 5 minutes. Repeat the process on the other side of the coin. It may take a few treatments but will make the coin much better and bring a better price on E-Bay. I just sold 2 nice Indians, a 1873 and an 1874 for $400 on there last week and both were cleaned in this method. hope this helps.
