I found my first arrowhead yesterday while detecting an area here in Wake County, NC that they are clearing for a new road.
This was found in an area that I've found a lot of CW relics over the years too.
I was told to post it here for some possible help on IDing it. I have no clue about Indian artifacts. :icon_scratch:
Does anyone know anything about this arrowhead? Age? Type? etc.
Thanks so much for any input,
MM

It may not be worth "much" $$, but as the finder, you're rich. I've found a few on my land that's been in the family for 100 years, though not as many as my grandfather found. Each is precious. Do some point research and you'll find there are several different "family" types. Interesting.
Thanks for sharing! -Noodle

Noodle,
I couldn't agree more. I'm super happy to find a piece of history that old.

I'm just glad this one didn't get run over by the bulldozer, since it was right in the path of all the heavy equip. :o
Have a great weekend Buddy.

Not trying to knock anyone here but, I don't think that point is Archaic by any means. I believe that point is of the Woodland era. Still a great find, just not quite as old. Sweet find

Doug,
What does the "Woodland" era mean? Age? This is all new to me.
Thanks,
MM (Doug)

The Woodland period is exactly as it says, the Woodland cultures camped in the woods, on gentle sloping banks, near the creeks. For easier access to water. 1,000BC-800AD.
In Early Woodland times-1,000BC. Points like Kay,Jude,Adena were made. (just an example)
Middle Woodland-500BC-400BC. " " Hopewell,Gibson,Snyder were made.
Late Woodland-400AD-800AD. " " Yadkin,Brewerton,South Hamptons were made for hunting.

Hope this helps. Good Luck on your next hunt.

Molly. :)

Looks crude due to the lower grade Rhyolite, but I wouldn't say the point itself is a crude design, thats just the way 'Holmes' were knapped.
They had limited means of good knapping rock, so made do with what was available, here in NC & VA.

Great info Molly, thank you so much. There happens to be a stream about 100 yards from where I found it.
That would be neat if it were a "Snyder" since that is my last name. ;D

Try this addy for typology....

http://www.projectilepoints.net

Should help, you can checkout points on there. If you click on the map for NC, you'll see what points are found in our state. No Snyders unfortunately. :(

I can send you a chart for NC points also if you like....need your e-mail addy.

Great site Molly. I'll bookmark that
PM headed your way for that NC chart.
Thanks so much,

Molly it seems you know your stuff.

Doug / Modern Miner invited me back to this spot and within 30 seconds i found this almost fully intact arrowhead, the one on the left, but it`s greener than his.
Do you think it also has a Obsidian Base? Mines green, his is black.

Your link to tips is great info.

And now for something completely different.

The 2 arrow head pieces on the right where found just north of Badin Lake in NC.
From the research i`ve done i`m guessing the Pee Dee area mound Indians of this time occupied the area before the early 1700`s, but that's just a guess.

Got any links on that area of Indians or an accurate time period for the points?

B|lker, your point on the left looks to be made of Rhyolite as well, just maybe a higher grade. The other two I'm not sure of the material, but the middle piece looks to be just a broken tip and the piece on the right looks like a Drill or Punch.

Thanks fish, great info, were gettin there.

The first point is an Halifax (VA Type). Rhyolite, Low grade. Middle-Late Archaic 5,000BC-1,000BC.
The second is as Steve said, the end of a point, Rhyolite too.
The last is a Perforator, used for punching holes. There's a lot of Patina on it but, I'd also say its Rhyolite.

Guys when you're hunting here in NC look out for lime green Rhyolite, its a higher grade, shows flaking better, its a better quality rock all round, for what was available to the American Indians.

Here is a Guilford, made from higher grade Rhyolite. Also it's much easier to spot. Nice finds...

Molly. :) Good Luck guys.
