Found my 1st one.....need info ? ?

I found an arrowhead on Saturday the 30th while i was d - tecting I was looking down an it caught my eye
actually i did a double look lol i put it back down grabbed the camera and took a few photos
Saturay night and Sunday was the 1st time i checked out this forum "awesome artifacts" being found
and some very knowledgeable people on here
I'm hoping someone can give me a name / type ? and age ? for this specimen is it all there......it looks
to me like the bottom portion might have been longer w/a wider end maybe ? ? i know nuthin about these
It was found in the NE tip of Berks County, Penna. it measures 2 1/2 inches long and 13/16 inch wide

Hey-- and welcome!

If you ever get down this way, give me a shout. I find lots of quartz points-- LOTS. Once the Native Americans figured that they didn't really need to trek to a quarry for what they needed for tools, folks used what they had readily available--that being quartz, here in the Mid Atlantic. I have several points that look very much like your's. And no, they don't show flaking very often- depends on the composition of the stone, the 'workability'... You got a very NICE FIND!
Hope you find more and have a blast looking for pointy rocks with fine edges rather than just metal detecting. (no offense D-tectors) The history goes SO much further back!

Hi riverhunter thanks for the invitation sounds like you have some good sites to search
truth is if i wasn't de - tecting that day i would'nt have found it i think de - tecting and looking for indian artifacts
are 2 "great hobbys" you can do at the same time i do agree with you on the history going "sooo much further back"
a big THANKS for the welcome !! my find brought me to it an i'm glad there is a forum on this subject i learned
some already an i'm sure i'll learn a lot more from all the great people here at T Net

I have to agree, MD'ing is cool but... when you think about how old these "rocks" are. It's truely mind blowing, to think that these artifacts have been lost for thousands of years and to be the first one to touch them since, my heart skips a beat everytime I pick one up out of the dirt. My first thought is always wondering what the person looked like who created the artifact. Certainly not the typical "indian" we all picture. More like stone age people, in fact these finds are from the stone age.

Very nice point! I'm gonna throw another opinion at ya as for a date on this point. Looks more Adena/Hopewell to me, approximately 2,000 yrs old, not archaic (just my opinion). Yours looks very similar to the Adena I have in my first photo. The bottom photo shows 2 archaic examples, notice the "ears" on the base. Now not ALL archaic points will have the basel ears but it's my opinion that your point is from the Adena period which would be pre to very early woodland.

Doug, I'm not real sure yours is an Adena. Not all stemmed points are associated with Adena. Yours looks more like a McWhinney or a Genesee to me.

DorkFish, by golly I think your right. The stem on mine is a bit different. So from what era is the McWhinney and Genesee from?

I did learn one thing though there's a lot of varietys out there more difficut to ID than your average
de tecting finds luck was really on my side that day in the mean time i have a lot to learn from you

Mike, I think Molly and DorkFish are right. Looks like you indeed have an Archaic point. Also looks like I have one as well that I have been mistaking for an Adena for the last 8 years . That's the great thing about this site, lots of knowledgable people here

Mike it's not JUST your first find, it's an excellent Quartz find, I have many Quartz points, choice of material here is either Quartz or Rhyolite,
It's not often one can find one that's in that condition, its a beauty. I have maybe 10 out of 30 in mint condition.
So don't only think Great my first find, also think Great its a beauty too. lol.
Congrats again on your excellent find. You deserve it !!!

Yes, it is a grading system. It does differ though. Usually points are graded on:-
Workmanship.
Material.
Rarity.
But, I think if a states not got great looking materials, like Agate,Agatized Coral,Alibates,Flints etc etc (too many to list). well I would still class a well made Quartz point as a G10? even though its not rare & doesn't show flaking as such.
Might be a good idea to start a Thread, maybe collectors will take time out to post their 'G1-10's
