Hunted a huge field surrounded by brick colonials on four sides. Spent most of the time exploring the higher spots with no luck. Ended up walking through an iron patch in the lowest spot in the field while walking back to my truck. Usually find my sites on the slopes of hills so I didnt have much daylight left to detect. Got leather ornament, musketball, three different size tombacs, lead/pewter button and lead/pewter barrel tap? possibly as well as a partial hoe(not pictured). Lots of iron but few targets and no high conducters:(

Mid tones is the way to go with colonial sites. High tones I find on my colonial sites are mainly forged iron pieces. Drives you nuts. Sometimes you'll find a very early silver, but not very often.

True. The cob I found last week as well as a lot of my other small cut colonial silvers ring lower than a zinc penny. Early coppers and complete buckles can be high tones though

Maybe a barn site? I've run into several sites like this up in VT. In low spots or a swale where a home site typically wouldn't be. The tombacs aren't bad finds though.

Thanks and congrats on a great hunt!

The plug could be for the drain hole on a boat?

Best wishes and good luck!

When you're digging buttons like that, King Georgies and silvery Spanish are usually not far behind.

Or they were very poor and had little to lose

Thanks. It certainly looks like one of those too but thst would be an odd find in the middle of a field, miles from navigable water

I think sites like these with plenty of iron but little nonferrous are short lived structures, or housing for poor farmhands or slaves. A lot of the early sites Ive gotten on in the past had near double digit or more British coppers. Places of the affluent or places with a lot of traffic. Sometimes these less productive sites will produce a lone great find. My gold coin came from such a site
