I found this today out detecting in an old park.
its a dog tag belonging to SMOKEY..
I called the number on it and asked them if they still had Smokey
of course thier first question was whos this....
I told them i was a detectorist and that i found his dog tag
Turns out Smokey died about a week ago.
I found the tag about two inches down on an old dirt trail.
The tag will be retuned to them and they seem happy about it
the guy on the phone said his wife will want to meet me
i told him its no big deal im just glad they have some thing to remember Smokey by and have one more smokey story to tell.

WTG Rick....I never would have looked at it that way...but I'm sure you're right

Why is it that two repleys think this is odd i was just wondering.
havent you ever had a pet you just loved... its nice to have some thing to remember them by

Good for you!!!

It's cool to track down who an item belonged to and return it to them. I have a 1966 Class Ring that I'm going to work on returning when I get home from Iraq.

I'm don't think anyone replied that what you did was odd...my remark was directed to your comment about the owners having another story to tell about smokey...thought that was an interesting way of looking at it, besides just having the tag as a keepsake...

as for the above comment...after reading about all the rings returned, it is different to hear about the return of a dog tag...your finding the tag obviously touched the owners...unlike some of the class ring owners, where some members barely get a thank-you...

Nice find and nice story...

Rick,

WTG, I'm sure the tag means a lot to the owners. I had a similar thing happen to me several years ago. While underwater detecting in the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter, Fl., I found a very large brass dog tag with the dog's name, and a phone # with an old area code. Fortunately I was able to do an internet search with the same phone # and located the owner. What's strange is that the tag had been lost 10 years before during one of their many trips to the inlet, and her Rotweiller had died two weeks before I found the tag. The owner was very appreciative for the return of the tag.

Fishingnutt,
I think it's very thoughtful of you to have tracked down the owner. I'm sure it brought great joy to them to have that tag back, especially since Smokey's death was so recent.
I always try to do the same, but my tags are usually back in the 40's or 50's. I still try to see if maybe a son or daughter is listed in the phone book.
Great job!!!
