Patterson, Mims Join Central Valley Residents to Rally Against New Protections for Frogs and Toads in Local Mountains

-Could Force Closure of Two Million Acres of Land in California-
SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Jim Patterson (R-Fresno) and Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims will be joined by dozens of concerned citizens at a rally at the Federal Courthouse Friday to speak out against a recent decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to add the Sierra Nevada Yellow-Legged Frog, the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog, and the Yosemite Toad to the endangered species list.

Ignoring the pleas of 40,000 residents and business owners in the affected areas, the USFWS’ decision could impact about two million acres of private, state, and federal lands which include much of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains including parts of Fresno, Madera, Mariposa and Tulare counties.

“The Endangered Species Act must be amended to take human impact into account,” Assemblyman Patterson said. “If we do not balance the need for protecting wildlife with the needs of other critical state resources and industries, we will destroy our ability to provide water for farming, timber for building, and fuel for transporting goods to market.”

“Unless the People rise up, they have no voice in the decisions that affect their lives and communities,” Kirk MacKenzie, of Defend Rural America said. “The county supervisors in the affected counties can, should, and must take ownership of defending our lands and rights. Residents and representatives in the affected counties must follow through with the appeal process, and the counties should create and fund a permanent defense against future egregious abuses of our environmental legislation.”

The frogs in question are spread throughout 17 California counties: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, El Dorado, Fresno, Inyo, Lassen, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Nevada Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Tulare, and Tuolumne.

I think it is the introdused fungus killing frogs and toads, not gold prospectors digging in streams. I am sure we are all very care full not to harm wild life. I forget the name of the fungus. There was a nature show on it some time ago on TV. The fungus is on almost every continent now and is killing frogs by the hundreds. Any thing from wild life to humans that walks in an affected body of water can spread the fungus to an unaffected body of water. Shutting down streams to gold mining will not save frogs. Only killing the fungus will save the frogs. A little off topic here may be. But very true.
