I haven't posted in some time . I moved from Martha's Vineyard to the Berkshires. I purchased a property that dates to the 1700's much of it open field. I found an old well in the field and pulled a dozen or so coppers ( some I'll get to posting ). I've started to work some other areas and yesterday pulled these two. They were both at about 8 inches deep. The soil is super rich and not nice to these coins . The Nova is in better shape than the Fugio. The Fugio is completely reached out on one side but the rings are clearly legible. No silver from this field yet ? Will post more soon !!
Okay, i just added a pic of a few other coppers i recovered near the well hole. For the most part the soil has had its way with them. Will post again with new finds.
I went back to the area I dug the Fugio yesterday and while I didn't score any coins I did dig this ornate spoon handle and posted a pic of it here. Any comments welcomed !

So far everything I've recovered has been copper, less a mercury dime. I'm hoping to score something silver from the same time period as the Fugio ! 28 acres to cover with a ten inch coil I will be at it for years.

Thanks, The Vinyard, MV , my prior digs were full of pre 1800's finds. Western Massachusetts is, I believe, full of coins to be recovered but the coins tend to be roached out from the acidic soil ? Just saying.....

I agree , this field has a few wet areas as well. Unless the coins are silver or gold the chance of them being in good shape is not great. This is the field I'm working.

The fields that aren't well drained are usually pretty bad for copper coins. On the other hand they are great for pewter buttons, so hopefully you'll find some military finds there. As for the coppers, in my experience, the best soil would be a rocky mix on an elevated ground. But again, if the field was fertilized over the years they might still get ruined.

I agree , this is a field that has mountains on either side . There is a hydraulic push from both sides. The field is pretty much wet down the center the entire year. It flows down to one end where it trickles into what becomes the Kinderhook Creek. There is plenty of dry area to detect and I'm not sure the wet area was farmed ? I attached a pic of my truck and how I discovered the wet area ,LOL !!!!

My belief is that there's gotta be some silver? I did return yesterday and dug an amazing spoon handle, very ornate. I included a pic. No new coins .

Hey, I just checked your Nova , sweet coin. I agree, for the most part the ones posted are toasted. Mine is one that I won't clean too much as I've seen coins go from crusty to unreadable after cleaning.

Am curious. Was there any history as to the property itself that was shared with you before buying. Would love to know what you find out about that spoon. I’m down in naples, fl. No possible digs like you have. Jealous. G

Great finds. Yes soils around here aren’t very kind to coppers but I’ll take them any day of the week. If you need help covering all that ground let me know lol

Yes, when I lived on Martha's Vineyard the soil was very granular and the coins I dug on farm lands were actually in great shape. The soil I'm digging in now is almost black and very dense. More acid content. I'm hoping to dig anything silver to see how it's survived?

I dig in Maine and also have similar soil, however, it does not corrode silver, only tarnishes! BTW I think you have a King George copper in that mix
