The weekend before last ModernMiner, DDD-777 and I hooked up for a Saturday hunt in North Carolina. We didn’t find anything that spectacular but it was a lot of fun. It’s always a treat to go to new parts of the country and hunt.

Left to Right – Andy, Doug, Me

A few highlights of the trip:

The properties were awesome. You felt that you could pull anything from colonial to civil war to modern era stuff.

Yes, that’s Doug(on the far right) in his fruity looking hat. :icon_jokercolor:
At the first site Doug went behind me and starts digging in an area I had just covered. At first I was apprehensive thinking “wow, did I miss something?”. Then I was reassured when he dug a big piece of iron.

At the 1920’s house there were not a lot of targets other than under the magnolia tree. I dug some pennies and moved on (didn’t want to waste time on shallow clad). Andy eventually made his way over and started digging the area. A while goes by and Doug and I inquire as to what he is finding. He informs us of how much clad was in the area. Confirming what we already basically knew we continued hunting. Another 15 minutes or so later Andy yells over to Doug “I knew it! Persistence paided off working this area. I got some wheat pennies and an Indian Head.” Now I was thinking, what?! So I asked him “really”? “No, not really” he replies, “I was just trying to get Doug”. Well he got me.

Here is one I really did find:

The last site was fun because the owner of the home – an elderly man in his 60’s was showing Doug his fencing sword. He wanted Doug to use it as a probe. Well somehow he steered the guy over to me. Seeing that the guy was not to be turned down I took the sword and demonstrated the use of it as a probe. Then I politely set it down against a tree and started detecting. So I “shook” the old guy and he went back to Doug. He then followed Doug all over – talking his ear off while Doug was trying to detect. :laughing7:

Nice story & photos Bob. Looks like a real nice place to hunt, congratulations you guys on the finds & the IH.

P.S. that is a pretty fruity hat! LOL

So YOU got all the quarters! ;D I think I pulled five pennies for each quarter from under that darn tree. Are you sure that wasn't the landscaper in the third pic? :tongue3:

It was great to get the opportunity to hunt together. You and Nate will have to come out next time or Doug and I will head up north for an "expedition". I'll be sure to bring sunblock with me too... ;D :sunny:

What a great picture of you three! ....any chance you could send me the one of Doug in the hat? I REALLY may need that one for future reference. ;D And the site pics!!! Wow! Isn't that a lovely place! 8) Congrats on that Injun, Bob! Sounds like you all had a fun time!

Nana

Bob, those were some impressive looking sites, and it looks like winter gave up down there a while ago! Nice Injun, and that famous Tootsietoy.

P.S. that is a pretty fruity hat!

Bob, couldn't you crop that one photo a little before you posted it? :laughing9: :laughing3:

Glad you could spend some time with your buddies! The finds were just icing!

Congrats,
CAPTN SE

a house very good.. and some excellent pieces.

i have found barber dimes, indian head pennies and wheaties as
shallow as an inch, but have turned around in the same are and
hit clad as deep as 8 or 9 inches. thats why i dig all signals...

Nana & Dan - unfortunately I think that is the only picture with Doug and his hat. He warned me about not taking pictures of him. I toke the one rationalizing that I could crop him out....

Nick - that is funny. We should have done a movie - the three stooges go detecting. :D

Allen - you are right. I was taking a risk by going elsewhere and not digging those signals but those coins were like right on the surface and the old stuff we were finding was at least 3 inches deep. If you find three memorial pennies right next to each other at less than 1/2" deep and then you get another shallow penny type within a foot of where you dug the last three, then the odds are that it too will be a memorial. So with limited time at a site you have to go with the percentages.

The abuse I take here on TN. :tongue3:
Thanks for posting only part of my "fruity hat" there Bob.
Actually it my Mexican landscaper hat that I use to sneak onto properties. I carry a leaf blower and act like my detector is a weed eater. ;D
I had a fun time with you two clowns. I'm sorry the finds weren't the best, but at least you got an IH and I let you & your wife sleep IN the house. I made Andy sleep in the garage the night before, because he scared the h-ll out of our little dog. :o
Just kidding Andy, we love you buddy. :-* (not really)

Bob,
I could of used you today to sidetrack the old man again. I stopped by to detect after work as you know, and he clung to me for almost two hours talking my headphones off. :'( I gave him your phone number and told him you wanted to chat more with him about using his fencing sword as a probe. Expect a call soon. I told him you work an off shift so he should be calling after midnight.
What a friends for!
Seriously though, thanks for coming down again. It was great to see you and Marilyn and you are always welcome here.
-Doug-
P.S. Don't send Nana any pictures PLEASE!

Great Stuff!!

What is the metal piece in picture #7 (above left of the indian head penny?) I have one just like it, and never figured out what it is for.

Nice job on the indian head penny and wheats! Yeah meeting up with people is a lot of fun! :) Thats why I always meet up with JuJu to go hunt other parts of the country. :) It's fun and theres lots of laughs even if we dont get anything. ;D
