Gettin Busy With Some "Babysitter" Booty in the sandbox!
HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SMOKIN!
Ok.. so it wasn't really "smokin".. but it was HOT today. <wiping sweat from brow> And Humid! But as wet and dank and sticky as the air was today, it was moving, thanks to a breeze kicked up by the frontal system that's bringing MORE HOT DAMP (humid) air this way. It was the same way yesterday here in Central Kentucky, but at least I got an earlier start on my activities yesterday. Today was a somewhat later start, and had to endure the heat of the day, so to speak.
Yesterday (Sunday) My first day off this work cycle, I woke my dear wife and coaxed her out of her nice soft warm bed with the promise of breakfast picnic style at a local park. Of course I had ulterior motives, but I'm not so naive as to think that my wife didn't already know this. We stopped at one of those Fast Food Chain Stores, one that claims to have served "Billions and Billions".. funny, I think of Carl Sagan whenever I say that.. "Billions and Billions of light years away.." <rolling eyes> What a GEEK!.. ME that is.. <blushing> Anyway, grabbed some biscuts and fixin's and drove out to the reservoir (park) and set up breakfast under one of the shelters at a picnic table. The sun was up already, but it was just peaking over the top of the wooded hillside above the shelter as we ate our biscuts. The Cicadas were tuning up for another day of love lorned serenading. Ever notice how much they sound like weed eaters (string trimmers) albeit tiny ones.. wzzzzt wzzzzzt wzzzzz zzzzt.. <shaking head> Oh never mind.. anyway with the bugs a buzzing and the dew glistening off the grass on the hillside as the sun put a shine to all the little water droplets, I was itching to get started detecting.
Yeah.. ulterior motives. This park is the venue for a local tv station's "Free Friday Flicks" event during the summer months. They put up a big screen at the bottom of the hill and project recent (not first run) hit movies.. uh.. suitable for family viewing. You know, Disney, Animation, etc etc. They've shown these movies for free for several years now but I never really knew just how many people attended these things till this year. Friday Evening, before the movie (dark) my wife and I drove out to the park and by the venue. OH MY GOD! You would have thought the state fair was going on! The entire hillside was COVERED with blankets, folding chairs and people waiting to see the movie. At the top of the hill there were no less than four concession "trailers" at least one, maybe two "booths" where freebies and promotional items were being handed out by the promoters and the tv station. Along either side of the hillside all the peoples cars were parked in the grass. Yeah.. I was thinking "I've GOT to go detect here." So Sunday morning, with the grass still wet with dew, and my wife rolling her eyes, I put on my knee pads and strapped on my finds bag. I started detecting back and forth across that hillside from the bottom, right in front of the screen location, to the top of the hill where the concession trailers were located.
Oddly, though I found a couple of dollars in change, most of it was NOT on the surface, but rather under the turf. Hmm.. I guess someone else beat me to the detecting on this site.. again. *sigh* Oh well, I wondered if they detected the "parking" areas? Alas, it was getting on towards lunch time by the time I got to the top of the hill, and it was getting HOT. Maybe a little early for lunch, but I figured I'd better show my appreciation to my spouse for allowing me to indulge in my hobby this morning. So, after sorting through the finds I'd made.. like the coins, the bling.. yeah.. I found one bracelet, gold? don't know for sure, no stamp or markings, but it is not attracted to a magnet. Maybe it's gold plated silver? <shrug>
And there was this necklace.. one of those complicated, three stand beaded thingies that some women like so much. <shrug> I found a lot of pull tabs of course, but they are EVERY-FREAKIN-WHERE! Oh, I found a couple of flashlights. One was one of those cheapy promotional item "keychain" type jobs, and the other was a bit more robust, multi led, aircraft aluminum body.. etc... and they both still worked!

I found one lone soldier... searching with his binoculars for his outfit no doubt. I found Cinderella..or a "gibbet" of her anyway. You know what a "gibbet" is don't you? It's one of those little button decorations for those foam shoes like "Crocs". I never understood the need to "dress up" your shoes, but hey, I'm a guy I guess. <shrug>

Near the top of the hill I found These little gizmos.. one, the broken remains of a probe thermometer I think.. and the other an electric motor with an led still wired to it. I have no clue what it might have come off of.

I found some other things.. a golf ball? a lead fishing weight
.. some metal snaps and a button, some plastic looking key ring or somesortasomething. I found an aluminum carrabiner (probably used as a key ring). There were two glass and one plastic "gems" A JET FIGHTER!!!?? and a token with some winking joker on it. Never heard of "Namco". <shrug>

Here's the picture of everyting but the coins (clad) that I found Sunday Morning on the "movie hillside"

As I said.. it was getting hot.. it was almost lunch time, so I called it a day, for now, and took my wife to lunch then on to other errands like Grocery shopping and what not. I had fully intended to come back that evening when it was cooler and try to detect on the sides of the hill where everyone had been parked. Well that didn't happen. Life's funny that way. As I've heard many times before, "Life is what happens when you make other plans." How True!
I *DID* get to come back to the park Today however, Monday.... after taking my wife to first one very early doctor's appointment, then to breakfast, then to an annual eye exam appointment, then home. It was almost lunch time, TODAY, before I got back to the park, and it was HOT. As I stated at the top of this story.. HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT. I still never got back to the parking areas by the movie hillside though. Instead, on a whim, I stopped in another section of the park (the other side of the lake..er.. reservoir) at a picnic shelter that has a Volley Ball Court..er.. "pit" or whatever it's called. I've been meaning to check it out since Memorial Day but there's always been someone there, today there wasn't. Oh.. and I had my camera with me this trip. <grin> Here's the view from the parking lot.. of this shelter.

... the lake.. er.. "reservoir".. is in the background.. the "movie hillside" is farther still off to the right and out of frame. On the other side of the lake.. I mean "reservoir".
I began detecting as soon as I stepped into the grass of course, and started finding targets as soon as I did. Mostly garbage.. lots of trash around shelters. Metallic trash anyway. Pull tabs, bottle caps, cans and can slaw. There ARE coins too though, if you are willing to take the time and sort through all the background.. and foreground.. above ground, and underground junk. <rolling eyes> I managed to find quite a few memorial pennies, and a handfull of dimes, even three whole nickles! I also found what I thought was going to be the find of the day just under the big oak tree at one end of the shelter, a George Washington Presidential DOLLAR coin. COOL! I've found several of those lately. Never gets old!
But OH MAMMA! Was there finds yet to come! <shuddering> There was the Volley Ball court..sandpit.. whatever.

Now I've detected volleyball courts before, with mixed success, so I was not really expecting to make a lot of finds today. No Really.. I wasn't expecting to.. BUT I DID!
Starting at the far left hand corner (in this picture)...
I started sweeping the sand with my detector down along one side.. when I almost reached the far corner of that first "line" I got a quarter signal from my detector.. COOL.. and this is what I found.

... However.. before I could even stand up I caught a glint off of this, not but a couple of feet away..

Way Cool!... and then I got another quarter signal.. and another... FINALLY reaching the end of the first line, I stepped over a couple of feet and and began a line back in the other direction. Began that is.. but I had to stop for another quarter signal.. and another.. and another.. <raised eyebrow> stood up.. ANOTHER quarter.. and another.. HUH
I had to litterally check my finds back to see if I had a hole in the bottor or something.. but no, I'm not dropping my finds. BUT SOMEONE DID! I was trying to figure out just how someone was playing volleyball with that many quarters in their pocket(s). And the finds kept coming! Quarter! Quarter! Quarter! Net.. nothing......... end of line, stepped over, started back.. nothing...... Net.. Quarter! Quarter! Quarter! Quarter! HOLY SH***** !!! And they kept coming! Quarter.. Quarter... Quarter.. I am NOT kidding! I found over.. are you ready for this.. you might want to sit down or something.. I know I had to. <still shaking with excitement> I found NINETY SIX (96) quarters in that sand box!!!!! That's over $24.oo in quarters ALONE! I'll probably NEVER have another day like that.
I was still aghast, and agoggle and puzzled at why there would be so many quarters in one place. I mean I know I've not detected here many times before, but I HAVE detected a few times, before summer. As I was walking (dragging my leg with that heavy finds bag weighing me down) back to the shelter to sit down, I spotted this in the grass.

That's when things started to come together in my overheated mind. A Quarters wrapper in the grass. Was it only one? Could there have been Two? Three? As I sat at a picnic table counting up the coins and coming up with over $24.oo in quarters I surmised that perhaps some clever person found a unique way of keeping the kiddies close at hand and not wandering down to the lakeside while they were picnicking or having a party or whatever.. they took a couple of rolls of quarters (or three) and had the kiddies turn their backs and tossed them in the sand.. like hiding Easter eggs or something... then had the kiddies go "treasure hunting". <grin> Hey.. that almost makes sense even! At any rate, I'm thinking that without metal detectors.. they didn't find much.. not nearly as much as *I* did. <grin> Baby Sitting by way of Treasure Hunting.. the coins were the "booty" <grin> "Baby Sitter Booty"
YIKES!!!!! Thunder and Lighting outside as I type this in. I need to wrap this up before the power goes out and I lose this whole post. Besides, I ran out of room, and I'll have to answer my own post to put up the picture of all that clad "Booty". HOLY COW!!! I can't believe the day I had today!
Well here's hoping that you all get to get out and have a day like this one!
Happy Hunting Everyone!
