The shaft would unthread from the spring once the motor was disconnected. That would be the least destructive. It’s an interesting method of reducing shock from the motor starting as long as there isn’t too much torque or friction once it’s started

Shaft seems well married to the spring then.
Might be pressed into the fitting on the motor shaft too.
The opposite end of the assembled shaft suggests a permanence...
Two set screws on a piece of pipe/bushing would have made more a more serviceable joint between the motor shaft and whirligig..

If I have not already been enough help... (help!) B.B.Q. grill motors for rotisseries work good for painting arrows. But they are noisy. l.o.l..

If all it does is drive the whilygig , enough torque and speed control and a small variety of motors could in theory work when driven shaft is fitted to it..
Gears change speed, and torque, even direction depending on design and application.

Why your gearbox is noisy needs known before any consideration of if shims would help.
Does not appear to be easily serviceable though.

As I like to say sometimes when working on stuff today (and I used to be in a couple maintenance departments , so I'm not real helpless on some items)
Somewhere there is a Chinaman laughing at me.
(Or an engineer , ect... Though engineers often get wished a kick in the$@# on difficult or hard to access work , though in fairness they have parameters to design within, often cost and production based. )

Third Day is my all time favorite band. I love Mac Powell’s voice and the southern rock style of their band. This song is not new. The band called it quits a couple years ago. But this is the first year I’ve heard this and it is becoming a favorite Christmas song for me.

it starts with a hole in the ground where the furnace will be built....Paul is looking like a true key west conch in this pic...he looks grumpy after digging that hole.
then its time to build the furnace from fire brick.
Once the brick is up we have to pipe the gas and air into the funace.
Finally you can see our solid key largo mahogany guns....these mahogany plugs are used to cast wax replicas....the wax models will be used in a special sand that is tamped and packed around the wax plug. The wax is melted out and the bronze is poured. You can see the back of one of the cannons after there poured on the bench in the mahogany cannon shot. im turning cylinders now that will be made into gun plugs.....just have to pick out a design to copy....probably make some replicas of the silver miniatures for king Philipp the fifth that were found on the 1733 fleet.having a lot of fun with this project !!

In all my working days I only put 4 yrs in for others-the rest was what I wanted to do basically.
When one truly enjoys the process it's really not working, it's enjoying the journey.
Not many can do this in life as they have not the spirit inside to take them on the journey.
Even the simple things can be a part of the journey, and there's a few chapters in everyone of those it seems.
Bart there's responsibility that comes with things, and what I have read you take it/have it/wear it/and certainly live it-

Lost wax method. On a large object. Interesting!

I ended my career as a foundry rat/grease monkey.
Styrofoam was the medium used as a pattern as opposed to wax.
Acid and resin (not exactly compatible in the wrong ratio's) were used as a binder of the sand packed around the foam patterns.
Air needs to escape for molten metal to flow into voids. I never studied hat part but in intricate patterns , it's an art as to where to put gates ect.
Even chill blocks (cast iron bricks so to speak) were used to cool an area faster than others. Or rather, reduce heat of flow to not burn out a spot.
