Hey guys after 6 years of swinging I finally did it! I dug it up yesterday morning at a farm in SJ. It looked like a copper that I didn’t know existed it was so incrusted. The funny thing is after I found it I put in my chest pack and swung for another 2 hours thinking there’s gotta be a gold coin here when I’m all actuality it was in my pack already. Any way thought I’d share with everybody
Looks like 1854 D

One of my first finds ever found and I posted here was an 1870 Seated FULL dollar.

I posted some pictures, somebody said it was fake, somebody else said yea probably fake and that was the end of conversation.

I wasn't happy then- and I'm still not happy now several years later as I don't remember seeing *anyone* else post a full seated dollar although I may have missed it. IMO- it shoulda made it up top looking back with what I know now.

OP good job on the coin. I'd be very happy if I were you.

To the OP, I would be very curious of the weight due to the fact that I routinely search old burned down cabin sites.
Never have found a gold coin in those areas. If that’s what a burned gold coin looks like...I want to know!

I’m curious if there were old square nails littering the site (indicating a burned building).

Congrats on the excellent find! :occasion14:

****- my whole yard (acres) has square nails in it. If that means fire, it must have been a village. [emoji2957]

What detector did you use- and what # did it run up as?

Boom baby....Banner

Congrats! I’ve found a few old gold items covered in a black coating. With time and my fingernails were able to scrape the substance off, both rings. More modern gold has come out shiny gold for me. Maybe yours was also in a fire or in a gravel type area causing the damage. Gold coin is a gold coin. Awesome!

its a fake sorry - counterfeit

heres one example

...BUT - if it is ...one pictured is supposedly valued at $75

Sorrymake that 3 on the counterfeit coin. Gold as a rule would Not look like this. Sorry for the bad news but it is what it is. I think Casper ' s info is indeed correct. Counterfeiting coins goes back centuries. if an old counterfeit still a great find .

Amazing! I'm going with the theory it was burned. I have found gold that's been in fire before and the amount of cleaning and scrubbing required to get it shiny again is frankly quite intensive.

Looks real to me ive found gold completely crusted over that was also real was probably just hid in a paint can of tar or tar paper melted over it during the fire pretty sure they used to hide coins like that frequently

Finding a counterfeit coin sounds harder than finding a real one. It is so old now you could sell it as a historical piece. don't listen to me I am not a layer, lawer,,lawyer.

I hope Misurako has not gotten upset with everyone?

Nice find but counterfeit. US gold coins are 90% 22 karat gold and 10% copper. They would not look like that or corrode from ground action or a fire. Compare weight to real US gold dollar coin to verify. It wouldn’t be surprising someone would counterfeit this date and mint mark since it is a rare coin . Still an extremely cool and interesting find.

For your sake I want it to be a real authentic gold coin! Let us know how it works out either way!
