Heya everyone!

So I found a gold nail today.
Yup!
It was bound to happen, thousands of regular iron nails and I finally find a gold nail. LOL
I never expected this!

My scale says it weighs .3 grams.

I posted the picture on a Facebook chat that I was in and was given some great information about its possible origins.

I was told that it could have come from an ornate Chinese Box used to keep important items in.
This nail was found a couple hundred yards upstream where I found my Chinese coin.

Tell me what you guys think. :)

7 tenths of an inch, it very well can be solid gold. like you said the pitting indicates it is probably an alloy. im guessing 14-18k gold.

Seems like it ought to weigh at least a couple of grams - you posted that it weighs .3 (3/10 's of a gram ) this seems very light
indeed . Or was that a typo and you intended 3 grams ?

Holy Heck I made banner?! LOL
You guys knew before I did. :D

Thanks everyone that voted. :)

Is this a first banner for the prospector side?
I've never seen one on this side before.

I havnt been on much, I have been pretty busy but wow what a great surprise today. :)

I got to Chucks coin a little late yesterday so I wasn't able to have it tested.

When it is dry I noticed that it darkens up a little bit and it makes a Tinging sound when dropped perfectly on its side.

As for weight, yup it is .3 grams, I figured it would have been more if solid gold.

I have been meaning to get back up to where I found it and look for anything else but I haven't been able to.

Thanks again everyone for voting banner. :)

Please excuse me. Did the gold test comeback positive? I must have missed it.

Not yet, I have to wait till Monday.
It does darken up a little bit when dry though, gold usually doesn't.

Heya everyone,

So I got into Chucks Coin today and the nail was Gold Plated.
He put his acid on it and it reacted with a green bubbling, cleaned the hell out of the spot on the nail though, making it a bright lustery gold. :)

Still an awesome find and he thought it was also a nice piece of history.

No K rating at all.
I am going to guess that it was for some sort of Hope box.

According to Wikipedia large scale electroplating took off in the 1850's.
There is also "Rolled Gold" but I doubt that this nail is a rolled gold nail.
The base metal must be brass though as it is not magnetic and I scratched pretty deeply and it was still a bright gold color.

That makes more sense. I must have misinterpreted what my master blacksmith said all those years ago :icon_thumleft:
