That looks like the EPA/CESSWI books!!!

Klondike here...

Just a note to clarify a point about MSHA...

IF you are a commercial mine owner... you shall follow each of the catigiries contained in the book pictured below and in another post here....

If you are a MINE WORKER you shall follow either or both sections "Part 46 and/or Part 48" of the MSHA regulations...

Part 46 is all about UNDERGROUND mine workers safety..... Part 48 is all about SURFACE mine workers safety....the rest of the book is for MINE OWNERS/OPERATORS

So don't panic as a worker and you are contemplating working for a commercial mine....

BTW... If you are contemplating a commercial mine position for work and you ARE NOT required to be MSHA certified.. Please do not work for this mine as I guarantee you, it WILL be an unsafe mine... Mining is dangerous by it's self.. much less adding supervisors and owners who don't all the safety rules...

Good luck to all of you... hope you find much gold...

This Fridays episode 01/13/2012

Short on time, the Hoffman Crew decides to run night and day in a struggle to get to the gold, while a federal mining inspector pays a surprise visit to both Fred and Parker. The inspector finds safety violations and both operations face closure.

BTW... If you are contemplating a commercial mine position for work and you ARE NOT required to be MSHA certified.. Please do not work for this mine as I guarantee you, it WILL be an unsafe mine... KLONDIKE, WELL STATED! :hello2:

I FIRMLY BELIVE IN SAFETY AGENCIES. THEY ARE WATCHING OUT FOR THE LITTLE GUY.
WHETHER MINING GOLD OR COAL OR WHATEVER.... MINES ARE DANGEROUS AND IF THE
OWNER IS NOT WATCHING OUT FOR HIS EMPLOYEES / PARTNERS, THERE WILL BE HAZARDS
AND THE LACK OF INFORMATION WILL GET FOLKS HURT OR KILLED.

SOME OF THE RULES MAY SOUND LIKE THEY ARE DESIGNED TO JUST SLOW YOU DOWN, BUT
THEY ARE THERE DUE TO SOMEONE ELSE BEING HURT.

GOLD FEVER IS A GREAT MOTIVATOR AND IT WILL GIVE FOLKS TUNNEL VISION, THAT
TUNNEL VISION IS WHAT WILL GET YOU HURT.

SAFE HUNTING, AND GOD BLESS.

i have wondered when MSHA would show up. I have just retired from working with the MSHA regulations in industry. They can be MUCH worse that the half-a$$ inspections the mines got tonight. I have had newly hired kids tell me that they have the ability to write up anything that they "Think" might be unsafe. I found out they do!! It takes a lot of paperwork to appeal but can be done. Some things that could have been cited: Back up alarms on equipment and any vehicle on the job-site, written certification that any electrical tool on the site has been inspected and checked , hard hats and safety glasses, emergency cut-off switches with trip cords on the moving tromell, and on and on!!! This is why we need to be sure we are "prospecting" not mining!! The MSHA rules are to protect the miners but there is no lower limit on the size of an operation. If you are mining , or on a mine site, you fall under the law!! Fred should have known this since he is such an experienced miner! the Hoffman "Yokels" don't know anything, everyday is a new world to them... the Big Nugget mine has just operated on the sly for years. See what TV exposure gets you!!

Who wants to invest in a spaceship and what not so I can go mine Eros, the closest asteroid to earth that's supposedly has over a thousand billion dollars worth of gold :tongue3:

if bruce willis isn't busy he might go. he's done it before. :tongue3:

What Got me was the Inspectors Comment.

"We have to Find Violations"

This shows Me, it's a Money Making Operation,
nothing More.

once they reach their Quota, they let the rest of the
so called Violations Slide so they can
make their Quota again Next Time. If the Miners are still alive :-\

I'll bet Half the Violations they site Miners for
don't even Exist on Paper.

Like DER & Coal Mines Here.

They Have sighted a Mine because there
wasn't enough TP In the Outhouse,
& Before he left, he walked behind it
& Relieved Himself.

It's all about Getting their Cut without using the words "Taxes"
or "Protection Money"

I'm with you.

How do we Pick up the Asteroid & What unregulated
Island on Earth can we set Down On,
& Roll it out the Cargo Bay ?

I Refuse to let MSHA Extort any of the Profits from Us,
as we Chip away at it ;D

It's a shame most of the Hoffman's gold washed off the end of their sluice. I would suggest that after every 4 hours running they stop for 30 minutes just to change out the miners moss, especially now that they are in the pay layer where there is so much flour gold. They can run the concentrates later or have two men do that while the other four get back to mining. The mats should have been changed out every time the plant shuts down as the re-starting blast of water always washes fine gold out of a sluice.

Before they are done I'd suggest they scoop out the settling pond just after the sluice and run that material again, It's bound to be loaded with the fine and flour gold they lost, plus they should run that material through a small trommel instead of the wash plant. :icon_thumleft:

Of course it's easy to be a Monday night quarterback when hindsight is 20/20 :tongue3:

I caught that too ...... I bet the inspector wishes that statement wasn't broadcasted on national TV. :tongue3:
It does go to show that when MSHA shows up they WILL find violations no matter what. >:(

Ain't

It's like "Even if we got to invent some to keep our Jobs" :(

Maybe even "Caution sign has Dust layer on it $300.00 ??? "

If you do any metal detecting, as we all do, you know there must be gold in every inch of soil on the site. Some places more than others. Your right, the pond at the end of the sluice should be set up to be scooped every now and then as the operation is running. ALL dirt should be run in between the best dirt and some should be run twice. Anyway that's just my opinion. I know its TV and there's time restrictions. And you have to make it interesting for the viewers. And for guys like us to sit back and right stiff like this. Can' wait for next Friday Night.......... RALPH

:argue: Retards in action :'( such stupidity and they allowed it to be shown ??? As I've told folks for over 20 years MOSS packs, whenever the slurry is messed with in any way shape or form ADIOS ORO PURO. Only 1 real miner shown in the whole series--the fella with the 250+ oz a week op and he just snickers at these idjets and runs his op(successful) completely opposite. What a hoot. Come on kid and get some bloody gold for your righteous GPa-John

Goodyguy

Two sayings for you -

As my grandpa used to say (among other, more colorful pearls!) "Common sense isn't so common..." It's not about being a Monday morning QB, it's just about taking a step back and thinking it through, which most people cannot or refuse to do. This leads me to my second saying, we use in the Army " you've forgotten more than they'll ever know!"

:laughing7:

Here is a letter from MSHA. Great post GoodGuy

...Thank you for your inquiry. However, you should know the facts--not hearsay. First, MSHA provides safety rules to protect everyone in the mining industry. That includes workers as well as foremen, as well as owners who actually work at their sites. The safety rules are meant to protect EVERYONE! It doesn't matter how large the mine is--it can still hurt and kill miners.

Secondly, this agency receives NO MONEY from citations issued because of poor safety practices. That money goes to the United States Treasury. MSHA doesn't need the money collected from citations to operate this agency, nor are the employees paid from it.

We operate this agency for one reason--to keep EVERY working miner safe and healthy throughout his work shift so that he can return home safe and healthy to his family everyday! It’s simply unbelievable that anyone doesn’t WANT to be safe while at work.

Thirdly, you should know there are rules in the MSHA/mine safety law that protects small mining operations from having to pay large fines that can ruin their business. If you or any other mining operator believe that the fines you receive from MSHA can kill your business, the law allows that you can appeal your fine to MSHA and have it reviewed for possible reduction to be sure that it DOES NOT ruin your business.

Why do you guys impose monster regulations on little miners? It seems
with all the failures and deaths we have with large operations you
guys would have better things to do than bother a 3 man operation.

Hey GG..

Klondike here...

There is no doubt that really dirty water... and especially water heavy with clay robs a box of gold...it is a fact....pure and simple..

With that being said,... did anyone pick up on when they did the 350 yard test...and weighed the gold....Todd said".. that's 1/2 ounce per hour..."

Then they ran 18 hours somehow expecting to get 40 or 50 ounces from 1/2 ounce per hour material...and guess what.. they recovered 9 ounces from 18 hours of run time...amazing...the test and the actual run turned out to be the same...

I don't think they lost as much gold as the show wants you to think.. but it sure makes it entertaining...

Just a thought....

A note about MSHA.....in consideration of several comments here...

I have encountered the "INSPECTOR" before..not the one on the show.. but similar... I also drive an 18 wheeler and have been pulled over several times and as of yet, never received a ticket...attitude goes a long, long, long way with anyone...

But back in the day.. they real problem I had with MSHA as well as OSHA..was some of their regulations overlapped and were impossible to satisfy both agencies at the same time.... example....OSHA wants the electrical grounding a certain way and MSHA wants the grounding a different way...

The inspectors of MSHA are a lot like a police officer following you in your car...if they are a mind to, each CAN and WILL find a reason to stop you....and cite you .... if they want to...

The regulations are so many and so detailed that it is nearly impossible to satisfy all aspects of a MSHA mine inspection....

But if you really want to make an inspector angry...just start mining without even calling MSHA... that makes the entire office angry...guess what your inspection will be like when they eventually show up unannounced...You bet with a chip on their attitude....and they will be looking hard to write up what they can...

Your best defense, but few actually do, ....but 2 people I personally know actually do this.....they study and KNOW the entire rule book..backward and forward.. and upside down...and during an inspection..they will recite from memory ...chapter and rule and paragraph...when an inspector points out a possible problem....which an inspector isn't expecting and will NOT write up much...

They both are also MSHA trainers.. but have their own mines..and while they train folks for MSHA they don't agree with all the rules....and make themselves known during an inspection by knowing the rule book better than the inspector.. that is the best defense for a mine and operator that comes under the scrutiny of MSHA...

Hey TnMountains ........

Actually 75 of 100 serious injuries and deaths occur in mines employing 5 or less persons.....and there are many, many, many more small mines compared to the larger ones.... if you are in a small mine environment.. the odds are against you that someone will get seriously hurt...without education and training....

I remember when I was just 16 years of age.. paying my first speeding ticket..at the pay widow was a carton.. pictured two people standing on a cloud.. both had wings..one looked very clean and perfect... and one had bandages and looked rather ruffled.. the one with the bandages made this statement.... "...I've been driving for 45 years and only had one accident..."

And such as it is in a mine....just one accident can make you very dead...and everyone should be dedicated to protecting one our most valuable assets..someone's life... for what is a life worth....or a missing leg....or a missing arm or hand, or an eye....and so on....

Just a collection of thoughts...

Klondike....

Very wise words Ike,thanks!!
