You are correct. A lot depends upon experience. I have been in large construction my whole life and I think my letter was knee jerk. But that being said I have had OSHA all over me before as well and sometimes they just look for stuff if you are in compliance. But it only takes a second to have a bad day.
I guess I do like the wild cat attitude and the devil may care way the show is produced,, cause I am towing the line all the time on my sites. sighhhh ,,,gold....
Thanks!

Also keep in mind that, in remote areas of Alaska and the Yukon Territory, you may be many miles and hours away from the nearest hospital. An accident that may be an inconvenience in New York or Los Angeles can be life or death in the wilds. All the more reason to be safety conscious.

so who really thinks Hurts kid went 80 miles on that quad!!!

I've done it before, when it mattered. When your'e fourty miles from nowhere and need something you do what you have to do. Horseback works too, as well as thumbing it.
One time we had a snakebite at the claim, and 40 miles from the nearest town. Nine volt batteries, some suction from those old azz snakebite kits, and a chainsaw got us out in time to get him to the hospital. Turns out it wasn't that big a deal, but you can't be too careful.

I wish they would put a little bit more effort into the commentary. On this weeks show they were having problems with dirt in the pump and Thurber had to go out to the screen to clean it. The commenter says something like "Jim Thurber has to go out and clean the screen. If he falls in the water is dirty.... and cold."

Really???? It's also wet, you should have thrown that in too. If anyone knows the guy that wrote that please take his man card away.

It might be a Pennsylvania Thing,
to warn people the water is Wet

Of course I Usually Remind them, After they Fall in.
To make sure they are aware.

I usually like to ask them "Why'd you go and do that? Didn't you know that water is wet?"

The looks I get are priceless.

I agree with that comment though. When he said it, my girl and I laughed about it.

Kind of gives you an idea of what the announcer thinks of the intelligence of the viewing audience. :laughing7:

Hey GG..

Klondike here...

There is no doubt that really dirty water... and especially water heavy with clay robs a box of gold...it is a fact....pure and simple..
With that being said,... did anyone pick up on when they did the 350 yard test...and weighed the gold....Todd said".. that's 1/2 ounce per hour..."

Then they ran 18 hours somehow expecting to get 40 or 50 ounces from 1/2 ounce per hour material...and guess what.. they recovered 9 ounces from 18 hours of run time...amazing...the test and the actual run turned out to be the same...

I don't think they lost as much gold as the show wants you to think.. but it sure makes it entertaining...

Just a thought....

Klondike....

I caught that as well, but running with packed riffles (really not even riffles but expanded metal) before the "expert" showed up to suggest upping the flow and steepening the sluice angle. coupled with running the rich paydirt afterward with packed expanded and with using high density water, I feel confidant they lost a significant amount of gold off the end of the sluice.

Of course you are right ......we really do not know what is actually going on .....only what the film editors think is the most entertaining parts.
Did you notice that Harness's water filter was not being used and was just laying around? I bet it kept clogging up as well.

I just wonder what the successful miner down the road uses to keep his water clean? I've heard that three settling pools instead of only two are recommended for a closed water system such as theirs. Especially running 350 GPM!

GG~

Also GG...

I always design my recirculating water suply much larger than what they have, especially when trying to support the amount of water they are moving...my design is similar in shape as theirs(kind of a question mark or a large comma look)...it always has a large boil area off the box...and then a 5 to 6 foot wide and at least 4 feet deep and at east 250 to 300 feet long channel curving (the curving part is imortant) around to a much larger pond where my pump is set up at the opposite end of where the gravity flow water is entering the settling pound...and if conditions require it...2 or 3 setting pounds.....

HOWEVER...with the amount of vegitation they are encountering... something else needs to be done beside more channel and settling ponds...an idea of which I have had lots of success with in the past.....

Sold at Home Depot or similar stores... using a senthitic shade material.. (it is really tough stuff... has lots of small holes in it)...suspend it from either PVC or steel pipe laying across the water..attaching several metal washers or small chucks of throw away steel plate or flat stock...anyting to hold the bottom end into the water and on the botton of the channel....and hang these in the water every 100 feet of channel...as part of the regular maintenence, remove them and wash them off and hang then back in the water before running again...I will also us a stell "spreader bar" attached to the bottonm of the shade material.. attaching a rope to each end and staking on the banks of the channel....helps keep the material in place...as well as when cleaning use the ropes to pull the now clogged shade material up out the water...bottom first and the up stream side, capturing most of the vegitation behind the shade material "damn"....

This is one of the simpilist forms of a filter...enexpensive, easy to make and easy to maintan or replace when worn out...

If your return channel is wide enough.. the water flow will be much slower than expected (you want high volume but low flow water flowing in your channel)and these hanging filters work really good...

You should use at least 3 of these... the first one should only hang about 1 foot into the water..seeking to catch mostly the surface vegitation....the second on hang to about within one foot of the bottom....and the third, touching the bottom....besides nice wide channels to slow the water flow down, much of the silt will drop out due to much slower water as well as the "screen" will also add to slowing the water down...

With this set up... almost none the vegitation will ever make it to the pump... and a few scoops using an excavator in the channel now and then inbetween the screens will keep their mine water flowng very clean and for a very long time.....

Klondike...

Klondike as usual you always have the best solutions to common problems :icon_thumleft:
Been there and done that really separates the greenhorns from the sourdough's

Probably take the Hoffman's another season or two and they'll be experts :tongue3:

Hey kuger...

On one of my Alaska gold anventures...we were 10 hours by ATV 4x4 from the nearest person....and that's how we went into town.....by ATV..10 hours in and 10 hours back... a 2 day trip....for supplies....

BTW way all around the Alaskan towns and villiages that happen to be located next to paved road and highways.. there is almost always a well shaped ATV trail along side the pavement...for miles sometimes..as the ATV is the vehcle of choice for many folks in Alaska during warmer weather...

Yea,I am not sayin it cant be done....I have too.....I dont think he did though....he was clean!Trust me,I know what its like being further than 40 miles from no where.spent most my life there

Personally, I think spending my life 40 miles from nowhere is a great place to spend it. :icon_sunny:

Watching 'Guerilla Gold Rush' right now and it offers a glimpse of what mining is like without MSHA. speechless.

......yea,I miss it everyday!

I agree, the 80 mile trip to town looked staged to me.

If you watch closely, I think many portions of the show are set up and or staged.

Not that it matters...it is still an enjoyable show...and the stuff that is staged, who would really care?

I agree

the gold is cool. the drama is bull. the scenery of the yukon and alaska is priceless. for a reality show it's pretty unreal.

If memory serves me right, on some of the previous shows, it was only 19 miles to town. :icon_scratch:
That said, it was still staged. Why??? Have you ever ridden 40 miles on an ATV 4 Wheeler? And when you arrive at your final destination, which would have been 80 miles round trip, just jump off and walk like you just warmed up for a ball game. Fresh as a Daisey and not stiff legged at all. I just don't know why they want to stage these little acts. :icon_scratch:

Exactly what I was trying to say!
