Any one tell me what this is? I weighted the rock before I crushed it and it was 8.2 oz a rock the same size that looked to be granite was 3.4 oz. it's not magnetic and has a specific gravity very similar to lead. It reacts with nitric acid but does not change colors. I'm totally stumped. It came from a tailings pile of a 3 metals mine. Helps please.

Bornite (peacock ore) looks like.

K i thinks it's iron ore, magnet sticks to and drives a compass crazy.

Daytime almost green color, and some blue also, changes to brown red in the night.

Here are two interesting examples of the quartz that I've been finding around central Minnesota. I've been interested in gold for a few years now and looked a a Gazillion google images. There i an old iron range where i'm from, the pits are all lakes now, but they report finding some, not a lot but some gold, along with lots of iron, copper, manganese, etc. I'm glad I ran into your thread I hope you can tell me about the stuff I've been coming across. Thank you.IMG_20160710_124020[1].jpgIMG_20160710_124041[1].jpg

Great forum! lots of good intimation. Soaked some pieces in muriatic acid for a few days.. Half debating on saving it instead of crushing. Think it's anything good? Or crush it up and pan? image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

Painite ?

I'm at work right now but I'll watch the video as soon as I'm on lunch. I ended up taking a smaller piece and crushed it. Had some great interesting things in the bottom of the pan, I'll post a pic this evening

I recently bought my first mining claim and picked up a few buckets of material to test and figure out where to search. The problem is that I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for yet. I've panned a little gold previously and collected rocks but I don't know much about them. I was referred to this website and it looks like I found the right place for mineral hunting! I think this rock may be silver ore but I'm not sure. Thanks for your help!

I have this Rock that is a shiny silver/gray color with the orange color around the edges. It is very heavy, non magnetic and is about the size of my two hands cupped together. I did a silver test on it using nitric acid and muriatic acid. It came in a bottle I bought online. I found this Rock in Chickasha, Oklahoma just outside by my house. When I did the silver test, I scratched off some of the Rock and put the drop of acid on it. It bubbled and the shavings turned gray. I just want to know what this Rock is. Can you help me figure this out?

I'm new to the site so if I go about things the wrong way I apologize. I recently began hunting for geodes and I'm hooked let me tell you!! I have found several very interesting pieces in the past two days. This one I found in a stream near my house. I chose to post it because it's easiest to see the detail without a magnifying glass. The others are difficult to capture the details in photographs
