Hi all,Third time lucky is load of pig's arse,i went back out this evening .Well i found a few buttons and buckle but the third find was not expected. I got a loud bust threw phones and i lent over to start digging and huge spider jumped out at me from its burrow.Bit of a surprize and i backed off and decided to leave it well alone.I didn,t kill it as it was only defending its home.I,m not sure if this spider is toxic but i don,t want to find out. :P :P :P Check out the size of its fangs and tonights finds.

I heard the urban legend that the average person swallows X number of spiders per year in their sleep and always wondered if there was any truth to it. I did a quick search and it appears to be a myth. Here is one article:

I must say I don't care much for spiders either but the're much nicer than chiggers . Those little buggers will flat eat you up .

I went out a few weeks ago MD'ing, got a good signal, dug a plug and when I went to pick it up, I got bit! When I looked down and saw a spider, I thought I was going to pass out. It scared the crap out of me. It was a wolf spider. I was ok, but was more careful.

Nice digging TP, I was thinking it may be a trapdoor but I believe funnelweb is the correct ID. Thanks for not killing it,Im sure it will pay you back by keeping a lot of mice and insects from bothering you. Arachnids are the most highly evolved of the insecta phyla with very complex nervous systems as well as many other impressive adaptations. While many of them can be quite aggressive they usually wont bother you unless you bother them first,keep your eyes peeled and be careful...Shoot

Don't you all have those REALLY nasty spiders? Orb Weavers or some such ? Heard they were really aggressive and deadly poisonous.

I don't know how you managed to get close enough to that spider to snap that picture! You should submit it to some nature magazine or something. That's an incredible photo. Oh yeah and nice finds too!

Think I would've soiled myself pretty badly if I saw that sucker anywhere near me. Just seeing the picture gives me the willies. *shudder*

I think I'd rather meet a snake, really. Snakes don't bother me as long as I see 'em first and can steer clear. Spiders you don't see until too late. I got nailed on the back of the hand by one a few years ago, and got a half-dollar sized hole where the flesh dissolved. It took months to heal. Never saw the spider, either, though I am sure it was much smaller than your monster, there. As a matter o' fact, I have a spider bite on my left foot right now that I got two or three weeks ago that is just healing. I wasn't even out detecting- just sitting on my front steps when one zapped me. Never saw him, either, but I knew within a minute or two that I'd been bitten, when my foot started itching.

Yup. Most people don't like snakes, but I'll take them over spiders. I have had snake encounters several times. One even fell from a tree branch across the bill of my cap, once, and was swingin' back n' forth in front of my eyes! That one gave me a bit of an adrenaline rush, but fortunately, it was just a little harmless green snake, as were most of my other encounters. I haven't met up with any of our poisonous snake species yet, except for a huge rattler when I was a teenager.

Congrats on the finds, but I would wanna see a lot more silver and gold if I was meeting up with eight-leggers of that size!

I think your spider belongs in a new category called Worst Finds! There aren't any huge spiders in Iowa aside from the pet shop nasties but I got an ugly bite on the top of my foot last fall and it didn't heal for a couple months and now I have two red scars. I would rather eat a dead spider than hold a live one!

Long story, short version...Went Gold prospecting three years ago. Got bit in my sleep. Wolf spider. Bite caused my immune system to start attacking my own capillaries. Seven months later I had to have my immune system "turned off" and "Rebooted"......With CHEMO! Not fun.

I darn near died because of that spider and agree that the only good one is a dead one.
